Hi guys first time building and owning an ar-15 , just finished it and was wandering where I need to lube this gun and what you guys recommend as a good Lube.
Cheers !

Oil, CLP, transmission fluid, 5W-30, 10W-30/40, Frog Lube, G96; the world is your oyster. Just run that bolt carrier wet. :D

About 13 years ago at the CFSAC (Cdn Forces Small Arms Competition), I was shooting alongside US National Guard teams. During a break from the firing line, he showed me how to lube their M16A2 Bolt Carrier Group (BCG). :)

They brought up a peanut butter jar full of LSA (lubricant, small arms) and dipped the entire BCG inside. After the dunking, they shook off the excess and dropped it straight into the opened upper. Then they joined the firing line.

There, welcome to the AR addiction!

Cheers and have fun,

Barney

Based on the advice of a friend, I got the cheapest ( I went synthetic) wheel bearing grease you can get.

Lubed up my Norinco AR and proceeded to shoot off 90 rounds as quick as I could insert the mags. Got it as hot as my 90 rounds in rapid fire would allow.

Not one issue, except a poorly inserted mag.

Grease stays in place better. Oil can evaporate if it gets hot enough. For our "battles" at the range, grease works well for me.

I like something you can spray through the e-port, so I'm a fan of aerosol G96. When I've shot for a while and things aren't feeling so smooth, just spray the carrier through the port, pull the CH and spray again, pump it a couple of times and load. If you're doing it right, you'll end up with spatter on your shooting glasses.

Wow I heard guys like to run their ARs sloppy and wet... But that's quite sloppy and very wet....

The Source, formally know as radio shack.

They have this thing on the rack called "precision luber". It's some form of light weight oil with a teflon additive, rated for up to 500F, in this little pen size bottle with an application needle.
It's awesome, been using on my AR for going on 5000 rounds now. No problems.

I use grease on the barrel cam pin and bolt lugs.
I use the mentioned oil on the rest of the BCG.
I soak a bead of the oil into the gas rings and put it together.
I run a bead of the grease along the bearing surfaces of the BCG, and on the exposed side of the cam pin.
I put a drop in the gas key and smear it around.
That's about it for the upper. Wet where it needs to be, dry where it does not. My system runs awesome.
Can't say I shoot more then 200 rounds a session between cleanings. Usually only 100. Perhaps if I shot more this method would fail, but I doubt it. I keep the oil pen in my range bag in case, have never needed it.
