Lubricating SKS

Anyone tried those murray spring operated firing pins? Hate like heck to add something to a firearm, especially as they were apparently installed in the first russians but removed after a couple of years. Maybe they thought a broken spring was more likely to jam the firing pin than crud, just a thought.

It was probably found to be unnecessary, the berdan primers used in milsurp ammo take a good hit to light off. Being a military issue rifle they would have been cleaned and maintained regularily, so the spring would have been another thing to fiddle with during the routine. HeavyBullet, Ive always put a thin film of oil on mine with zero problems. Just be sure to clean it occasionally and you will be fine.

do any of you guys do a qiuck windex spray immediately after using or do you wait until you get home/next morning? do you also diassemble gas tube, remove the bolt etc?

I don't windex and just clean it after I get home. I do a complete strip and clean everytime I shot it. Shouldn't take more than 20.

so sherlock, I know everyone has their own way to clean but has you have lots of hands on time, what do you use to clean? I have done a ton of reading, oil or any petroleum based product wont remove the corrosive salts. do you use soap and water or any special recipe? Thanks in advance.....:D

LOL, nothing special here.

I hot water the gas tube and pistons and bolts etc. Pretty much anything that'll fit into a 5 gallon bucket that I fill 1/4 way up with boiling water. I also run some down the barrel (don't burn your hands). I wait maybe 10 mins (have a smoke, take a piss), than just take all the stuff out and let it air dry, which should only takes a few minutes.

Then I put all the small parts that was in the water into another container, this one is filled with varsol. I use varsol for most of my gun cleaning, so use any solvent of your choice here. I like varsol because it's cheap and widely available. (I put the used solvent thru an old t-shirt and it removes most of the burnt crap. I store them in glass spaghetti sauce jars after.) I soak for a few minutes and then wipe them down like any other guns.

Then I just lube where I feel I need to. This is were everyone seems to do it differently with oil and grease and motor oil and what not. I just oil the bolt rails and trigger group and be done with it.

That sounds good enough to me sherlock. Of course you take the barrel from the stock? I will have to tell all you guys my stopped at the border by US Homeland security guys one day...........Thought I was going to spend Christmas in Levenworth!!!!!! Anyone interested, message me, I'm not sure I want to post it on the board lol!!!!!!
