I know this question will annoy some, and I hate to ask it this way myself, but here goes. :redface: I am supposed to go an look at some handguns a fellow wants to sell. Among them there is "a Luger" with "the original holster" and "a Walther PPK" with "the original holster". Unfortunately, the owner doesn't know any more about them and I haven't seen them yet. What are the going rates for Lugers and PPKs? I know specifc values can't be given without knowing manufacturer, dates, condition, matching numbers or not, etc., but what I am hoping for is a reasonable starting point, assuming both guns are prohibited (barrel length) and in good to very good condition, with no rare features or markings. I appreciate any input provided, and fully expect to hear "this post is useless without pictures". Thanks.

You really need to do your homework as you will get burnt if you don't know what you are buying.

Beware of reblued and Vopo pistols. They are not worth the same as original pieces. Matching numbers? Code? Year? % of Blueing? Condition of Bore? Etc, etc...

Get the picture?

I'll go low and say ONE DOLLAR until you can tell us more.

It's like asking what is a Chevy worth?

.380 ppk's tend to fetch a premium over .32's. and all the ppks tend not to be worth more than 350-400 since the 12-6 BS came out. And thats for a mint matching one, I've seen them down to 225.

Lugers are hard, so much depends on what it is, do the numbers all match, barrel length and configuration....again, I've seen an ugly parts gun with almost no finish for 125, and the sky's the limit. It's a bit easier to sell 6" barrel guns due to the wider market, but collecters will come out of the woodword for an excellent matching P-08. Pictures are what is needed here, then those who know more than I can give you better estimates....
 
Way too many variables, pre, WWII, post war, maker, markings, % of finish and matching numbers. In the US they stopped importing European made PPK’s in 1968 so those command a premium over US made. Need more info?
 
Going rates for Lugers? With picture.

How about this one. Mauser 42. All numbers match. Both mags are matching for the gun. Includes an original
holster. Bore looks good but not perfect. At the end of the barrel below the front sight there are two
(one on each side) dents. The previous owner made a compensator for the gun and used set screws to
hold it in place. I typically tell people that this was a special gun modified for a rare silencer (therefor the
set screw dents). Unfortunately the silencer had to be destroyed because it is a prohibited device in Canada.

Only picture I have. Lightened up to show more detail. Funny black line on the barrel below and to the
right of the sight is the reflection of the tripod leg.

Actually I have only shot the gun once and never even though about using the compensator.

I bought the gun in 1999. Unfortunately I do not have 12(6) yet (my court date is set for March 30). I had it transferred to a friend. I first expected that I would have to change the barrel to make it restricted. Luckily I was having trouble finding a longer barrel. Since the 12(6) grandfathering date has been changed, and due to a number of things I had done prior to my green slips expiring, I should be grandfathered next spring.

I see the gun once or twice a year when we set up a display at a gun show. I took the picture last spring at the Dugald (near Winnipeg) gun show. It was an overcast morning, lots of white sky. I put the guns (Luger & P38) on piece of white card stock outdoors, set the camera on my tripod, then took a number of shots with different exposures. Often the bigger the light source the better the image. On camera flash usually produces the worst images for showing detail.

And I wouldn't send it to anyone! Its all matching, almost anything you do to it will reduce value.
 
Since we are showing, here is my all matching BYF41 P08, both matching mags in 95% easily, with the complete rig (cleaning rod is for an earlier P08).
