Luger from WW1 with mags holster lanyard and story of how it got to Canada.

@ BUFFDOG:

I think it's even worse than that. This makes four threads I have been on in the past 3 or 4 days that he has wrecked. He is ruining the whole damned forum for the folks who want to learn and who want to get along.

And he is such an "expert" on everything. You and I still have our old Service numbers; I wonder what his is? Yesterday or day before, he was telling me that we had no Shermans in Service in the 1960s. That's odd; even my CAMERA hallucinated Shermans at SMC-63! They outnumbered the "official" Centurion VIIIs about 20 to 1, truth be told.

No Shermans in Service in the 1960s?

That is VERY odd. I might be getting old, but I seem to remember a firing range in Petawawa that had several of them lined up on it in 1961. And the Militia Regiments certainly had them.

Perhaps he is a LIBERAL, and is attempting to rewrite the History of Canada? But, what the heck do we know --- we were only there at the time.

I think it is time to get this Train back on the track. Time to talk about Lugers, ---- the Kaiser,s, the American,s, the ones of the Swiss, the Czars, a smattering of Balkan Countries, and even those evil Nazi ones.

It would seem that our friends out there in the flat landscape of Saskatchewan has come up smelling like a rose with his Luger acquisition. Now, as it is often said, without pictures it never happened. Are you listening DD?

His opinions all come from playing COD and (I suspect) reading the Nazi #### cartoon strips.

For some reason, this really made me laugh!!

Smellie and Purple, I respect your honest efforts to have educated this fellow up until this point. I gave up entirely long ago! He is a complete moron and troll.

The fact this guy hasn't been banned shows the sorry state of the forum lately.

Are any moderators ACTUALLY reading the threads anymore? It seems like I'm reading the youtube comment section, and no longer a civilized intelligent forum. To be blunt, this forum needs moderators that actually care or the trolls will simply take over. Perhaps some of our normal moderators are currently on vacation?

I think the worst part is that his moronic comments will be archived here forever if the moderators don't clean things up. It makes us all look bad and I hope to god nobody listens to the poor advice he's already given in countless dumb postings.

I think another side effect of this whole affair that the string of Nelson84 posts and threads has been discouraging to many of our normal members. The majority of threads are just turning into steaming piles of #### pouring out of Nelsons mouth.

ddorgan: I'm sorry to see your thread has gone this way. I hope you will still choose to share photos with us, this isn't how things normally go. Nelson will be gone soon and we're all looking forward to seeing the Luger.

Buffdog, Janice will be here later; she knows the "post-a-picture" spell. (It is beyond my feeble mind!)

I will ask her to post a couple of photos of my three.

We'll get this show back on the road SOMEhow.

C'mon, guys! LUGER PICS, please!

DDORGAN, KJOHN, that includes you! LOL!

In my 5 years of collecting Ive held one luger with snail mag, nice to see another in canada. No matter the outcome its still a great find.

@nelson84, i thought you were leaving..............
You need to do some reading. for christ sakes, even watching, ie Schindlers List

Some of us are just hanging on here to get a look at that Luger.;)

Some of the Militia armoured units were still using Shermans right up to 1970 or so. They were automotively very reliable and made good training vehicle. There were still quite a few around the Armoured Corps School in the mid-1960s, incl a few de-turreted ones which were used as APCs until the M113A1s arrived in the summer of 1965. They even had a couple of white painted ones which were used as "live" training targets for the SS11 and Entac ATGMs. I learned to drive one and also was one of the first guys to drive an M113shortly after they were off-loaded from the rail cars in Borden.

In one of the other threads nelson84 told us that he had gone to university. He didn't say which one, or if he had graduated, but we do know that he did not major in
history.

Buffdog, Smellie,

Thanks for the Ross. I guess I'll have to take another look in the museum on Tuesday before I go on parade

1938 Mauser Oberndorf made P.08 Luger with original mags and oddly enough, a 1916 dated Holster. The grips have some unique "Vet Art"! ;)

(As far as I can tell, the Hakenkreuz was taken from a WW2 German Medal/Badge of some sort, and the middle of the P.08 grip was slightly whittled out, and the wood dust and glue was mixed together and the Swastika set inside of it.) It's a "one of a kind" for sure.

Also, since I am a victim of "age discrimination", I do not have a 12.6 endorsement on my PAL, therefore, this one is sporting a "Restricted" class 106mm barrel.... So it is "All Matching"... except for the barrel... :(

PS: If anyone can identify which medal/award/trinket or piece of Teutonic WW2 regalia the Swastika in my grips came from, it would be greatly appreciated! :)

"...very specifically exempt..." Daft isn't it? Lewis gun mags are too as I recall.
"...and story of..." Buy the firearm, not the story.

Nice pistol Desert Fox! I myself have a rebarreled 1938 S/42 P.08. Unfortunately I have not been able to shoot it due to not having a magazine...

I have a fairly large collection of guns. Conspicuously absent is a Luger. Over the years I have had the chance to buy a few, but always thought I could find one for less, or a better one for the same price. What a mistake that was.

One of these days I will get one. The workmanship is wonderful.

This is the only pic handy of mine, 2nd Telegraphen-Bataillon, Kompagnnie 4, Waffen 18, bought from a co-worker when father died and didnt realize till after he could have inherited it...came with holster with inscription inside "wounded left hip 3rd June 1917 France Clarence Larson Nanton Alberta 50th Calgary Battalion" Have found his Attestation papers, and his family immigrated from Iowa, next to pay for research of Service Record!!

Nice looking '38 Luger ,fox ! I have never seen grips like those, are they original ?

del3840, would you have any more pictures of your Luger ? I love the unit marking.

@Nelson I hope your earlier comments were for fun and not actually meant. The reason I say this is because my grandfather and uncle were in WW2. They both served on the East front and my uncle, only being 17, spent 3.5 years in a Soviet POW camp. My grandfather was also captured near Leningrad when his airfield was overrun. If he had not survived, I would not be here today. Were they national socialists ? No. That is all I will say on this subject.

To the OP, I hope we can see pictures of your Luger setup very soon.

Nabs.

The grips have had the pleasure of being a "Winter Project" by the Vet that captured this particular P.08... ;)

@ Nelson... I am sure you are just posting here in hopes of attention and/or seeing how long it takes to get a ban I assume..
But whether you are 12 or 21, you will probably be aghast at the numbers of neighbours and former neighbours I have had that formerly served in the "Natzee" Armed Forces.... I also had friends and neighbours who formerly fought under the British Crown as well.

One thing in common, they were all very friendly, hardworking, and appreciated what a blessing it was to live in Canada and to have survived the Second World War.

A few of them fought in the HJ and the Volksturm as young lads, one, who has since passed a decade ago, was captured with the 6th Armee at Stalingrad in 1942, and finally made it back to Germany in 1954... If the Soviets figured he had repaid his debt, who are you to judge??

Given the odds of surviving Russian capture, your grandfather was extremely lucky. You buy lottery tickets? The odds of winning are about the same that he got.

it doesn't look exactly symetrical to my eye so am wondering if it was a swastika that was hand, rather than maching produced. i collect trench art and have several pieces in my collection that are similar to yours, all hand made and uniquely individual. excellent individualized luger btw!

you put chalk in the markings to bring them out a bit more for the photos??

thanks

Sorry people. For some reason I can't get pics to load on my computer. It has rained here so harvesting is at a standstill for now. Will try to get together with KJOHN and get this solved.

Here is a Luger (and Baby Browning) with a story.......

This Luger Rig and the Baby Browning were acquired from the Son of the Veteran involved....I was told the Story after the purchase....

My father, ...... .........., was born on Feb 7, 1921. When the war broke out in 1939 he had just started his first year of university at St. Dunsten’s University in Charlottetown, PEI. In early 1940 he left university to join the North Nova Scotia Highlanders as an officer cadet. When he announced what he had done at the dinner table at home that evening his father, who had lost a favoured brother killed in the First World War, threw a potato at my dad in anger.

Shortly after joining up with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, my dad took advantage of an opportunity to move to the Royal Canadian Signal Corps as an officer and when he went overseas to England in 1942 he was a 2nd lieutenant with the signal corps and was initially posted as the signals officer to an artillery regiment. At some point he was posted to a Quebec infantry regiment called the Regiment de Maisonnaive as their signals officer and during his time with the Quebec soldiers he became bilingual.

Dad never spoke to me about the war, but on occasion I would overhear him speaking with former comrades over a few drinks. In particular, his batman during the war, who was a Quebecer named Pageois or something similar, would visit with Dad every few years during the 50’s and I would listen to them from the top of the stairs as they reminisced about the war.

One story concerned a time they had been stopped and told by a group of local people of a German troop staying at a nearby farmhouse. They went to the farmhouse on two jeeps and when they opened fire on the farmhouse with a 50 caliber machine gun mounted on one of the jeeps, about 25 Germans surrendered, even though my father’s squad was only 4 strong. My understanding was that this was at a time when the Germans in that particular area were losing and were quick to surrender when a opportunity was presented to avoid dying in battle. On this occasion, after the Germans came out of the farmhouse to surrender, a German officer appeared at an upstairs window of the farmhouse and dad’s batman shot and killed him. My father speculated that the officer had been asleep upstairs and was just checking to see what was going on, but his batman had reacted spontaneously. The luger that I have sent you belonged to the German officer who was killed on that day. The German squad that surrendered that day was protecting the officer who was a German paymaster. The paymaster had several duffle bags full of various different scripts including reichmarks, French francs, and many other currencies. When Dad tried to turn the money over to the regimental adjutant, the adjutant said he didn’t want anything to do with it and for the balance of the war whenever someone from the regiment had liberty to leave the front for a period of time they would visit the signal squad for a handful of the confiscated money, which might or might not be accepted when presented. Even after the war I remember my father having a satchel full of this war money which he told me was worthless, but would now probably have some historical value. Unfortunately, I don’t know what ever happened to the money.

The last time the luger was fired, and maybe the only time it was fired after the war, would have been in the early 60’s when I was about 15. I bugged my Dad to let me try it and he acquired some 9 mm ammunition and we fired about 50 rounds one spring afternoon. After the war, my father returned to university and spent his career as a civil servant. In 1950 he joined the militia on PEI and eventually retired around 1970 as a Colonel. He died suddenly in 1983 at the young age of only 62.
