Luger P-08.... was/is it any good?

I recall when Interarms and Mauser tried to get Lugers back into production. They were able to obtain the Swiss machinery. A quantity of pistols were produced, but most were high priced special edition models.
Didn't AMT manufacutre a stainless steel Luger several years ago? They used investment cast parts of course. I examined one at a trade show, and it really wasn't all that badly turned out.

The trigger mechanism is also downright SCARY in it's flimsiness. It all depends upon a closely toleranced transfer bar pinned to the trigger plate. No wonder Luger parts were NOT considered interchangeable in the field! Swapping a trigger plate often results in a non-working gun.

They are accurate little pistols though, if not the ideal combat sidearm.

I read a story of a guy that bought a luger off a ww1 british vet. The vet told a story how he came across a german officer in a trench raid. The officer pointed the luger at him, pulled the trigger, but noting happend. So the vet smashed the head of the officer with a shovel. He took the luger, never used it, and it stayed on his mantel for 40+ years till he sold it to the guy relating this story. The new owner takes the luger home, gives it a good cleaning, reasembles it, then tries to dry fire it. nothing happens. Then he sees that all the number match, but the side plate. The writer speculates that the German officer sat at a table with some other officers and they cleaned their guns at the same time. Side plates where inadvertently changed and that was that.

I have a luger, like it very much. I also own a Broomhandle. Comparing the two, it's no wonder the German military went with the luger. It's handy and points naturally.

The P38 is suppose to be more reliable then the Luger it replaced. Funny I have seen many P38s with their extractors blown off. Even in a old issue of Guns and Ammo, the writer is comparing 9mm pistols, talks about how much better the P38 is over the P08, then later during the testing part of the article, says he had to stop using the P38 because the extractor blew off:D
