Luger P08 barrel question

Hi All

I have a chance to get a luger at a great price, but it is prohib status, and alas, i dont hold a lic to own one. Too you guys who may have done this, what is the cost and hassle to replace the barrel to make it a resticted?

I have a friend who has prohib lic so i can put it in his name till the work is done.

I see marstar had barrels but are sold out, are they hard to find?

Thanks for any input

Andy

I think I saw a barrel for sale here recently. Finding a barrel is usually the hardest part. Marstar always lists barrels but rarely (if ever) have any stock.

It took about a year for a friend to get one from the USA. Same problem, barrels listed but no stock.

After the barrel is changed the verifier provides a report to the Registrar.

Thanks for the reply

I talked to marstar about the barrel, they said they were expecting a shipment in the new year, no idea as to when. They said it was maufactured in canada, any ideas as to who might be making them?

Is the barrel pressed in? Shouldnt be an expensive re/re labour wise. I figure I can get the luger around $400, but not sure if it is all number matching yet

Not having a prohib lic, can i keep the original barrel somewhere safe if i ever decide to sell it?

Andy

what I did was pad for the gun had it shipped to roger at dark international and e changed the barrel and reblued the gun for me for I think 200, it looked great he also made sure it functioned and cycled without issues.
I got the barrel from e-gunparts for about 80 bucks more.

good luck it's worth the time the paperwork is easy and roger can take care of that too.

The barrel is screwed in. No you can not keep the barrel. Either the barrel is on the gun and part of the gun or the barrel is a loose item and then it is a prohibited device. The Registrar will only let you change the class if the old barrel is destroyed.

If you find a hot smith, they will whip you up a barrel from a 9mm blank. I was thinking of doing this then finally recieved my 12-6 so I got the real thing. I know the feeling though, too nice a pistol not to own one of your own......

Dumb question from south of the border. What barrel length on a Luger makes it evil?

Not a dumb question Wiz, just a dumb law up here.

Anything under 4.13 inch is concidered prohibited. In order to own or buy them now, you had to own one at the time the law was changed. Im not sure when it was, but after that date, anyone who didn't get grandfathered in could never own a gun with less than 4.13 inch barrel.

Thats why im looking to get another barrel on a luger, so i can own it :)

You may want to ensure that you are not destroying the collector value of the gun. Have it appraised as is. If it is rare or collectable then have it sold as such and buy another mismatched gun for rebarreling.

Now if I were doing the work on the gun for myself I would take the original barrel off then bore it out and put a barrel liner in it. I would then add a little extra at the muzzle to get the total length needed (with the barrel liner extending the whole length). Crown the muzzle then put it back on the gun.

This is what I was going to do for a Luger I bought but have not yet done since I am still in a fight for my 12(6) status. You can always put a different barrel on it later if you wanted. I have done this with two other guns.

I would do this to the original barrel even if I changed the barrel on the gun to a new barrel. Since the relined barrel is no longer of a prohibited length there is no need to turn it in for destruction.

PO8 Barrels (Luger)

Sorry no.

They are still produced in Austria in the white , but for the European market.

You can change your own barrel, as long as you have a receiver wrench that surrounds very closely the front end and automatically puts the most pressure
on the lug below. Just follow the contours closely.
I make my own barrel vices and the wrench , but the wrench can be made
on a milling machine and a handle welded on. Brownell sells barrel vices too.
Warm the front part above the barrel thread quickly, apply both of the above
and a sharp but moderate "blow" will break the barrel loose.
No need to reblue as nothing has been scratched if done right.
Done it a dozen times over many years.
I made 6 and 8" barrels from Douglas barrels with the right twist , machined
the thread (metric) and contours, and used the original frontsight to be put back on the newly made one . If interested enough, I can give you the details of how to do it. But you will need a lathe and milling machine, or a
good Tool and Die maker as a friend.
I hope this will help at least some of you.
