I have a "much trashed" registration certificate from the 40's for a single shot 22lr Savage. My great uncle wasn't entirely forthcoming with accurate information either.

They tried to register everything they could for possible use in the war effort. I wonder what happened with the information after the war. These days you wouldn't have any doubts about how hard they would hang onto it.

Does this mean the army is going to be charged with collecting up our OC prohibited firearms in the future? Why not! Just imagine a half track pulling up on your lawn with a dozen burly soldiers brandishing automatic weapons of war just to pick up your gopher sighted in AR15. I can't wait. This letter shows the precedent has been set.

Precedent shmeshident .... all any gov't has to do is enact the laws they want. There is always justification besides the default "public safety concerns".

I've seen this type of letter before, I'm pretty sure they wanted Lugers specifically for a reason. The same government was handing out rifles and ammunition to loggers on the West Coast. Different time, different attitudes - you could also ask for a permit to carry from the local police station - and get one, even in the city. The last Chief's Letter (permission to carry a pistol) I saw was dated 1970 - and the guy who showed it to me was a former member of the SS.

The Lugers were meant for the European resistance via the SOE.
A similar appeal was also made for Colt 45 autos for the Parachute Battalion. Others acquired were .455" revolvers and some miscellaneous pistols.
A Colt Officer's Model Target cal 38 SPL made in 1908 with C^ stamp may be one of the latter.
