Hey everyone I enherited a new to me Franchi made in 77 it’s a 12 gauge 3” full choke with a 30” barrel , gun is in beautiful condition when I got it the previous owner said it needed a spring ... I cleaned it got half a sand box out of it and it has worked flawlessly until this season ... it seems to be having problems cycling either it won’t get the casing out of the way of the bolt and it gets slammed in there sideways or sometimes worse it will get the loading gate stuck and have a shell half way up on its way to the chamber ... anyone have any experience with these older franchis or even know where the hell one would look to find parts for them ?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

If you gun is a 3” gun, then it may have the 3” recoil spring in it which will give you problems when shooting 2 3/4” shells. The first order of business is to take the gun apart. Take steel wool and slightly polish the mag tube to ensure there aren’t and burrs or rust pits that may cause a hang up . Add a very light thin coat of oil to the mag tube. Reinstall the recoil spring, the governor ring and friction ring. Ensure that these peices are installed in the correct order for light/heavy loads depending on what shells you are shooting. You will note that the governor ring will have a flat side and a side where its cut on an angle. The light load setting is when the flat side is facing the muzzle. For heavy loads, have the angled side facing the muzzle. That is really all that is to it. Just remember the correct order of install....first the spring goes on, then the governor ring (in light or heavy setting) and then the friction ring. It should function after doing this. If it works with 3” shells but not with 2 3/4” shells, then you likely have the stronger 3” recoil spring. The magnum guns came with 2 recoil springs and the lighter spring is needed for 2 3/4” shells

Yeah I guess I should have stated I only shoot Winchester super x 3” ive never tried to fire 2 3/4 through the gun cause it only says 3” and I didn’t want to take the chance even though I understand that it would probably shoot both just fine I have tried the load ring in both positions and I have oiled the mag tube ... seems pretty clean and burr free I do wonder about the second compression ring that goes around the brass ring as it’s a bear to get the second ring over the brass one thank you for your input 1963 berretta

These are a kawpie-cat to the A-5's.............in a sort of way.
Make sure the split rings have the splits in the same place so both rings are open where they meet.
They work better this way.

I never had the need to separate the steel ring from the brass one. If you find that its difficult to put this assembly onto the mag tube, do exactly as kamlooky suggested and line up the slits of the rings in the same place. Also, make sure that there isnt too much oil on the mag tube as that can also cause hangups. Try running it with a dry mag tube and see if it helps

I’ve had the splits 180 degrees apart thus far and they are a touch tight on the mag tube but damn near impossible to get passed the threads at the end of the tube ... I’m going to try both splits in the same direction tonight when I go duck hunting hopefully it was just something silly like this that I’ve done wrong ... I appreciate your help and input

Nothing wrong with keeping the slits 180 degrees apart on most guns. But sometimes if the friction ring is as tight as you may be experiencing, aligning the slits is a quick fix
