A fine gent on cgn has two copies of the original Lyman bullet casting book for sale.
If you're a true leadhead, you'll snap one up.
$45 worth of interesting reading.

Back in the mid-sixties, bullet casting was a dying art.
It was only bullseye shooters who did it and Lyman was about the only mould maker, except for Hensley and Gibbs who made moulds for the carriage trade or commercial casters.
Lyman had lots of copies of these books which weren't selling, so they took a truckload of them to the local dump and burned them.

Then came the Gun Control Act of 1968 and it was illegal to ship bullets over state lines, to individuals. So shooters had to start casting their own bullets and the art had a renaissance.
So I always had a soft spot for Lyman for providing us with moulds, and they were virtually the only game in town.

And you could order any bullet mould in the catalog, as well as undersize and specific grain weights.

Thank you for that slug. I understand the value of Lyman's contribution to casting our own, but the deeper history I was not aware of. Thanks again.

The third edition can be found online on several sites. I have them all plus the one RCBS put out. I always find it kind of funny those who are strictly jacketed reloaders have such little exposure or understanding of cast bullet reloading. Until one buys books like the Lyman cast load books the load data is very sparse. Granted the main line load books are published by companies selling bullets. The early books are great for loading the old military rifles and I find that I can find the powders used in those books too. There is a lot of old Unique, Red dot , SR7625 and the like from old shot shell and bullseye reloaders floating around, the old powder and the old load books go hand in hand.
