Lyman Flintlock Rifle

I am thinking of getting into muzzleloading with a flintlock. Any info or opinions about the Lyman 50 cal Deerslayer. I hoping to get into blackpowder for whitetails here in Ont and I thought if I was going to do it, I might as well so it "old school".

Knowing Ontario weather....rain..rain... maybe look at a percussion cap rifle...flint locks are open to the elements and can get wet and not fire at all. Not raining on your parade...but IMO.

A-zone. Yes I had read that post and I have no problem with "working a few bugs out" on a rifle.

Toymaker. You are absolutly right but I think that is some of the appeal to the muzzleloaders. If it was strictly for the kill, I would just get the latest whiz bang laser stick and drop the beast. For me however it is more than that. If the planets line up, all the pieces fall into place and the a buck and I end up in the same place with dry powder. It just makes it all that much sweeter.

A little late for this year but I think next year is going to be a little more interesting.

Don't worry about the rain. I used a flintlock here on the west coast for many years..as have others I know...It is simply a matter of learning how to look after your weapon. After all that is what BP hunting is all about...doin it the hard way:)
 
Just came back from the range, I got to shoot a nib Lyman Great plains flinter :D:D Whooooeeee nice rifle, fast ignition :) sparked every time :D
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of these to anyone.

BOB, after a week of e mails to the fellow in pennsylvania with the N.I.B. Lyman trade rifle ($200) he gave it to his dad!!!!!!:jerkit: But i got wind of a fellow up island with a LYMAN .54 cal. flinter. Will have a look and if it looks good, will pick it up:D CHEERS GLENN
 
That's too bad :( Hope the you get the 54. Ask the seller what size ball , might be .535", the 50 cals like .495".
The guy that bought the 50 cal that I was shooting on Sun, came by to tell me, he has shot it every day since he's got it :50cal:
