Anyone have and use the Lyman Gen 5? I'm looking for and alternative to the CM... Not that I don't like the RCBS I'm just curious what else is out there...

This may help you decide..

I was reading that the other day, doesn't cover the Gen 5 tho... Nor the Gen 6....
Lyman from what I've been told has been working pretty hard to do better on the electric dispensers, RCBS just put something out that works and said "good enough"... Like I said... Not opposed to the CM just looking to see what else is out there... About time to step up to something digital...

I was reading on line about reviews on the gen5 seams to have good ones I have the 1500 rcbs one I like it very accurate , another one is the hornandy see for yourself and check the reviews.

I use the Gen 6 which is I believe essentially the same dispenser with fewer functions in the computer than the Gen 5, and I quite enjoy it.
I need to use the flow restricted for most stick powders to get accurate results. It dispenses a 40-45 grain charge with the reducer in a second or two longer than it takes me to seat a bullet and do a shake test and quick visual inspection in the previous cartridge. With ball powders I don't need the reducer but it takes about the same amount of time as ball powders tend to flow slower. Certain powders tend to always drop 0.1gr below what I set it for which is within the error range anyway (same error range on an RCBS). I only usually shoot to 200-300yds at most so 0.1gr in an average sized rifle case doesn't make a noticeable difference.

Ouch my poor debit card...

I have a few hundred 7-08 and .308 cases that need filling plus a hundred or so .223 loads to try out and was not looking forward to doing all that by hand with the old Lee PPM and my Lyman trickler.... Should have a good review (good or bad) by tomorrow!

Just loaded up some ladder loads for the range day tomorrow. Like mentioned above the meter throws plus or minus .1 grains, but you can always pour it back and try again so I don't see an issue.

Well I can't help but think I set this thing up for failure, I loaded 50 7-08 cases with H4350 and 30 45-70 cases with trail boss, neither powder is much fun to work with due to one being fairly chunky and the other being odd shaped and bulky... But it seems to work "ok"... Threw about 75% of the charges .1gr low wich is not such a big deal to just hit the trickle button and top it off buuuut I found the scale is really picky if it wants to read .1 or .2gr, if I hit the trickle button to top off a charge that the unit stopped at 13.9gr the scale reading won't change from 13.9 till it hits 14.1... My thinking is the scale has a slight over dampening built in to keep from minor fluctuations... For a precision scale it is far too stable if that makes sense to any of you?...

I'm not going to fret about .1gr tho, most of my cases are .308 and larger so it's not going to make enough difference to see for what I'm doing... Interested in seeing how it performs with .223 and benchmark next tho, should be a bit better than the 2 powders I've tried in it so far.
