Tried this in Optics, got no responses... figured I may as well try it in Gunsmithing.

I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy in .45-70 and would like to purchase a tang-mounted peep sight for Hunting and Cowboy Side Matches. I'm looking at the Lyman No 2 Tang Sight for Marlins and have heard both that it does work and that it won't work on my rifle. Does anybody have one mounted or know if it will work? Is there another brand or model that will work with my Marlin 1895 Cowboy?

Thanks much, Skokie.

I have a Skinner sight on all of my Marlin leverguns.

They are good looking, sturdy sights that work.

I regularly shoot a 6 inch square offhand at 100 yards during our BPCR winter shoots with black powder and cast bullets.

I put Lyman globe sights (number 17) on the front of the barrels with a very fine Lee Shaver insert.

Great sights, but unfortunately not legal for SASS Long Range Side Matches. I will check out the front sight though, Thanks for the response!

My 'Old Gunsights' book says that the Lyman #2 code JM and the Marbles tang sight with base M6 will both fit the Marlin 1895 rifle. It does not mention the 'Cowboy' model...........for what its worth.

Buy from someone with a good return policy.

These things were never standardized with respect to hole spacing or thread size so the only way to be sure is to trial fit one.

Just look up and n Lyman site it says it does number 2 Marlin!

Did do that, was going to buy the sight off of Amazon, as their return policy is great and noticed a review there also saying it wouldn't work. But I think I'm going to bite the bullet and give it a try. Would still be nice to hear if anyone actually has one installed on their 1895 Cowboy.

The old original Marlin 95's were drilled & tapped for the long base Lyman type sites but the new Cowboy" 95's are not drilled from the factory so a "two screw" mounting will require drilling before it can be done. A "single point mount" will work ( only using the tang bolt) for a light "carful" service use will suffice but if you are a bit rough with things while using them a two point mount is needed.

whichever way you go either Lyman or Marbles, they both make site bases to fit the "tang angle to bore c/l" and this needs to be right for the Marlin, otherwise you get an "oblong, fuzzy edged" site picture thru the peep so you cant pick up "any old site off a gunshow table" with any certainty that it will work.

I have a Marbles on my modern 95 Cowboy and have mounted several others for friends and we have found them sufficient (we would recommend the interchangeable staff model) for the same game you have indicated you enjoy. Some wanted the 2nd screw drilled some just went with the tang bolt mount and I haven't seen any come loose from recoil.

There is another alternative that a lot of guys & gals use in the Cowboy sillywet game and that is forgoing the Lyman type tang and going to a Vernier site (MVA in Montana) same as the Buffalo shooters use...a good tall one of those and your good to go short range or long range as far as you can see.

Which-ever way you go, Lyman or vernier, realize there will be a learning curve compared to shooting over the iron barrel sites that you are used too. I can elaborate more if your interested.

Thank you very much! I'm going to look into the Marbles model, I think a Vernier is probably too much for my purposes. Though you've given me alot to think about. As for the learning curve, I owned a Sharps with a Vernier-Style Tang Sight and shot it quite a bit. That said, I appreciate any wisdom gained from your more specific experience.

I managed to get my hands on the afore-mentioned Lyman No 2 Tang Sight and got it mounted, shimmed and sighted in without much trouble. However I do have a bit of an issue. As seen in the pictures, the two 'wings' of the hammer cut out on the back of the bolt (on either side of the firing pin) hit the sides of the sight itself and are abusing it unnecessarily. I'm wondering if cutting them off will have any ill effects, they don't seem to serve any purpose as far as I am aware of. If cutting them off is ill advised, then perhaps grinding them on an angle to clear the sight?

I'm also looking for a dovetail blank for the original rear sight, if anyone knows where to find such a thing.

I really like the sight other than this issue, it gives me a little over 33" of sight radius and I have definitely printed smaller groups since installing it. I will mention that the bolt does push the sight back slightly when the action is cycled, but that's not a huge concern for me.

Just be careful and take bit off at a time until you have clearance as those "ears" do have purpose. They protect the firing pin from "accidentally" being struck by anything else but the hammer when you want it to.
