Lyman single stage press difficulties.

Not sure if this is normal or not. When I do a full case resize with my Lyman single stage press the handle gets very sticky with its return to lower the brass out of my RCBS die. It is pretty easy to size the brass but there is considerable resistance when I return the handle to its upright position. It’s definitely not the press itself it has something to do with the brass and die.

Any ideas?

I assume you are reloading bottleneck cases. Put a little lube inside the case neck. The expander ball is probably what feels so sticky as it is resizing the neck

ahh lube on the inside of the neck... gotcha. Does this have any adverse effect on the powder when you drop it in the case? Does it not stick to the inside of the neck of the brass?

You just need a little bit. I use a Q-tip and lube one then I don't lube any more till it starts to feel sticky again. Powder will stick to it if you get too much lube on it

A minimal amount of lube is needed on the inside of the neck. I use a "Q" tip, sparingly coated, and swab every second neck. I've had no adverse effect on the powder.

Fill a film canister with very small lead shot, then fill with powdered graphite, dip your necks in that but stop before the shoulder. That will cure your woes.

I just roll an inside neck brusk on my lube pad and give each neck a quick in and out brush. Works good to cure the friction and I have not seen any adverse effects on the powder.

I only lube the inside of case neck when the expander ball starts to stick. I also tumble brass after sizing to remove any lube.

This is a quick way to contaminate your tumbling media. Try tumbling first to clean the cases, then lube & size them & give the sized cases a quick rinse in lacquer thinner or acetone to remove the lube and drop on a towel to dry. That will completely remove lube both inside and outside the case. Lacquer thinner & acetone both evaporate very quickly so you can prime & load the cases in short order. Just be sure to do it in a well ventilated area unless you want to start seeing stars.

I put a few drops of lube on the pad. I dab each case mouth on the pad. Resize case then clean out mouths with a q tip dipped in acetone. The charge the powder.

I ran into this same problem resizing 308 brass recently. I couldn't believe the difference it makes to use a bare minimum of film on the inside of the case neck. I have been using Hornady "unique" case lube which seems to be very thin, water soluble, and powder safe. As stated above, just wipe the tip of a q-tip with your finger with some lube, give a quick twist in the case neck and you will have a resizing operation that a baby could push up on.
