Hello y'all!
I have seen and heard good reports on the Lyman slug mould, the one which casts a waisted slug resembling a giant airgun parachute pellet.
It is supposedly designed to be inserted in a plastic shot wad and crimped over with a star crimp.

Since it is encased in a wad, I guess a slug made from wheelweights with a bit of tin could work as well as a pure lead one.
Anyone has experience on these?
PP. :)

I've loaded and fired a bunch in 12ga. Fed GM hulls, Winchester WAA12F114 yellow wads (no longer made), Winchester Super Field powder, W209 primers. I'm running a reduced powder charge to give recoil similar to light trap loads, while making IPSC Major. I use a Lee Loadall II with the primer feed upgrade. Given the production volume and handling required, using an expensive 12ga press for this usage would seem to be overkill. Accuracy very similar to Foster slugs such as those produced by Winchester, Federal etc. They're pretty easy to handload.

The folks who cast these for me use wheelweight metal, the new slugs from the mold are dropped into water to quench.

I`ve got that mould. So far I`ve cast around 150 slugs with it. The slugs are supposed to drop at 525 gr. with pure lead, but with the alloy I`m using (kinda unsure of the mix) they come out between 500 and 505 gr.
The accuracy seems pretty good, although that`s relative. I`m just using open sights on a fully rifled pipe. I know I can consistently hit a pie plate at 100 yds.(Offhand, these rounds are brutal off a bench after 4 or 5 rds.)

The load I`m using is with Fed. 2 3 4`hulls with paper basewad (hunting hi-brass) and low brass trap hulls with same internal dimensions.I`m using A 5% reduced load of Blue dot, Winchester 209 primer and WAA12R wad. According to Lyman, the pure lead slug gives better accuracy.Easy to load, for best accuracy and consistancy ensure that you weigh and sort the slugs into like-weighted lots prior to loading. Also had good luck with IMR SR 4756.

Loving the fact that for pennies a round I can load these, while sabot slugs from factory are anywhere from $13-$23 for five rounds, which of course= MORE PLINKING!!!!!!

They are cheap and easy to load. I use a lee load all. Winchester AA, 44gr of blue dot, win 209 and winchester red wads WAA12R. They group well in a rifled barrel 2.5" at 100yds. but five shots is more than enough. They cronographed at close to 1500fps.
I cast about 500 then sold the mold.
