I was mucking with some of my powder coated bullets this morning and discovered this:

that the Hornady 30 cal checks have higher sides than the Lyman. I sampled one Lyman and found that it didn't seat squarely, so I tried a Hornady, seated squarely. Not exactly a scientific test, so I measured the height of each:

Lyman = .069. Hornady = .076. Not exactly a scientific test, but the sides are for sure different heights.

Yeah, I’m reasonably sure the Lyman checks are older. They are a bit different colour. If I gas check, maybe I should do it before powder coating and make sure the base is clean, no flashing.

A lot of testing I did when I first started PCing slugs was with or without GC added, some before coating and some added after showed no benefit to a GC. If PC was on the bullet shanks...in short, PCing did everything a GC does and usually better, never worse.5
I have both >458 & .375 checks on my shelf but I havent seated one for more than 6 or 7 yrs since I did those tests, but every cast slug I use in a rifle gets PCed .
I built a couple of those pop can/beer can check cutters and that was a desperate failure from the start. I discovered that the metal was so pliable that securing them to a bullet base was not even close to being secure enough that they wouldnt become barrel obstructions, now they are used a cardboard cutters for cutting paper dividers between grease cookies & BP..

Its easy to change diameter of the gas checks when bullet sizing , whether they seat well or not sometimes depends on whether you fit the gas check on before or after you powder coat? Some fit better before and some fit better after. They all correct diameter in the sizer. I found no difference between brands to speak of. Availability is a bigger concern.
