m 14 caught my eye

The only thing I've found is that the 'glass one seems to be easier to do the fill mods on as opposed to the USGI wood ones. Although, if you get one of the M1A ones (I think), they don't have the selector holes.

I believe Airborn is also talking about the Norinco sponge wood over the fiberglass and not referring to the USGI wood stock.

The Chu wood is soft originally but can be made quite hard with time and effort in the form of oiling.

The USGI fiberglass is probably the most care free, drop in(block the connector block area) for low $.

There are plenty of wood stocks USGI(found in three types of wood), Boyd and maybe others along with McMillan synthetic stocks as well.
