M-14 Hot Barrel and Accurancy?

Not sure where this should be but figured I would start here. Might be kind of a noob questions. I've noticed with my M-14 (Norc) I get about 1 to 1.5 MOA @ 100 on the first 5 rounds out of a cold barrel. After that it goes down hill fast. I then start to get around 3 to 5 MOA @ 100. I figure it is either the hot barrel or Shooter fatigue or a bit of both. Any suggestion on what might be the cause and how I can correct it if I can.

Hot barrel woes

I think if you shoot and read most military rifles or others you will see this is normal unless its a precision or heavy barrelled weapon.If you think this is a problem on your m-14 you should try shooting a string out of a mini-14.Thanks--Dieseldog!
 
when the rifle heats up things start moving around. One of the biggest movers is the gas system. To shoot single rounds with lots of time for cooling between you want to have the gas lock tight (tighten up at 5ish - usually with shims). If you're going to shoot a string of 10 or more with little cooling you want to have the gas lock loose to give it room to expand with the heat (tighten up around 8ish)
 
I've shot my Norc M-14S until the oil started smoking off of the barrel (15 quick shots) without loss of accuracy (1.5 MOA). I've had similar experience with a M1 Garand. I would think battle rifles are designed for sustained fire without loss of accuracy. Maybe something is not setup correct on your M-14?

Can you explain what you mean by 5ish and 8ish. Are you refering to Torque?
 
look at the gas assembly from the barrel end. then picture 12;00 being top of gas assembly, 6 oclock being bottom of gas assembly.
now when you tighten the gas lock (8 ring) , 7:00 would be just past the bottom, then back to 6oclock and install the plug.
or tighten by hand to 5 oclock and tool tight at 6:00
