M-14 in Afghanistan

All of you Kool~Aid drinking KAC fanboys should enjoy this...

The role of the 17.3 pound M110 SASS is to replace the M24, not the M14.

The M110 SASS out performs 60's era M14s that were tuned up as sniper rifles
and modernized & enhanced M14s such as the M21A5 Crazy Horse out perform
the M110 SASS. This point is moot because KAC won the SASS contract...

Bottom line: The M110 is no threat to the MK14, M14 EBR, M21A5 and other M14 DMRs.

it follows then the m110 will be issued to SNIPER TEAMS and not at the company level- i don't have any idea what it is now, but we had 2 m14s per 12 man team or 1 per 8 if you were running a "light" team- he usually took high ground and provided a cover while the rest of the team did the mission- in the sniper role , the m14/21 was replaced by the m24, and now the m110- two completely differnt missions- one is cover, the other is designated targets at range

The M110 is not the DMR - the Army has DMR's accurized 5.56mm guns.

Interesting.

What are they feeding the AMU accurized 5.56? And what effective vs extreme ranges is it producing? I'm presuming supply chain constraints limits them to standard 5.56?

And now the story has come full circle.

The M14 EBR is the Army DMR in Afghanistan because the 5.56mm DMR ARs are not as effective as they need to be.

Here is a close up of the SAGE scope mount the M14 EBR uses.

The problem in some sort is that many user groups are adding their own opinions to the fray.

Some units are fielding M110's in Sniper/DMR roles, depending on their TO&E, as some snipers are held at Pl level in some units. Other units employ snipers as a Compnay or higher resource.

AMU builds 5.56mm guns for use as a Squad DMR, some units use M14's for that role - either out of real or preceived need.

Some units are using the M110 as a non sniper DMR, and are fielding the M-24 in a .300Win Mag platform for their sniper elements.

Yeah, there's no real need (perceived or otherwise) to use the AMU 5.56mm guns when the M14 EBRs are available.

The problem you miss is logistical, muscle memory and training.

As soon as you add systems, especially very different systems, heachaches happen, those headaches in wartime can kill friendies.

Sure lots of interesting info in this thread...definitely no regrets about picking the M14 myself!

In an organization as large and complex as the entire US military it's easy to see how there would be crossed wires about what equipment will be used by who, when, and for what, that's for sure.

But although I do not doubt in any way the effectiveness of the M110 I sure have a lot of confidence in my M14s. But as has been pointed out I don't have to worry about many of the issues the military does.

Interesting to note though that at the end of this thread, it does seem to be inescapably true that despite the known issues with the M14, they are still fielding them in a pretty demanding role. So even if their are supply chain issues, life cycle issues, or whatever, M14s are evidently valuable enough that they are willing to put up with those problems to keep some in the field.

Training is essential no matter what weapon the Army supplies.

It is not out of the question for warriors to be battlefield proficient
with more than one type of firearm and still receive logistical support.

Army Training Sir!

The problem starts when you start running out of spare parts in theater thus leaving with a 15lb boat anchor that can be only used efficiently as a club

Given your post contant I take it you have never been shot at.
When you are stressed like that you will default to your basics. Given most units get an M14 in theatre or shortly before - what muscle memory do you think they will be full effective with the M-14.

Given what I have seen with people using unfamiliar platforms (Sig 552, and FN OSW) that they default to attempt to use their M4 muscle meory, and it does not work well.

Secondly many of the M-14's do not do well with M118LR as far as longevity of parts goes, and since they are not slotted snipers often can only get delinked M80 ball - which is minute of barn door.

You are wrong again.

Given that you work for KAC I take it that you will never let it go.

That was a problem... a few years ago.
We are talking about M14 EBRs in Afghanistan here.

If you had not been banned on Ligthfighter you would see that real soldiers are recommending M4 w/ ACOG over the M14EBR

You were a big help of that forum.

Why do you avoid the topic and revert to personal attacks?
Are you trying to get yourself banned?

The Afghanistan M14 EBR program is just a few months old and the ACOG
equipped M4 isn't going to be a real popular DMR with real soldiers in Afghanistan.

Hardly a personal attack, just and observation.

I shot and killed someone with a 10" Mk18 at nearly 400m so lets not presume that the M4-ACOG setup is not effective. The problem is getting the soldier decent ammunition. A Vandoo CSM shot and killed a Serbian at near 900m with a C7A1 - so the platform is viable -- hence why so many Mk12 systems are out and about in USSOC.

Yep, just an observation...

Let's not presume that the M4 with an ACOG is worthy of DMR work in Afghanistan -- hence the M14 EBR as the DMR in Afghanistan.
