When I was selling my AIA M-10 7.62x51, There were lots of people asking if I wanted to sell the extra mag. I assume they must be relatively hard to come by. Some people have stated that M-14 mags may work in the AIA's but I wasn't able to find out for sure.

Milarm here in Edmonton had some 20 round M-14 mags, so I bought one to try in my AIA No4 MK IV.

Without any modification the mag fits fine, but the lock on the opposite end of the mag release would not snap into place to hold the mag securely. The problem was easily fixed by filing down the rectangular metal protrusion on the back of the mag. You can see in the pics that it looks a little too long. In fact it isn't too long it's just that the bottom edge tapers into the mag on the AIA. 2 minutes of Dremel and the mag fits and locks.

I've run 4 snap caps through it a few times with no issues. So for those of you looking for AIA mags you may want to consider the M-14 Mags. Get the 20 round one’s, should make it easier to reduce you “mad minute” times! :D

M14 mags are for a semi auto, so they have to be blocked to 5. Everyone wants the AIA mags so they can put 10 rounders in their M14's legally.

AIA mag is built for a bolt action firearm (allowed more then 5 rds) M14 (M1A) mag built specifically for the M14(M1A) which is a semi auto rifle and is restricted to 5 rds. Yes I know the M14 was auto as well as semi auto, but we use it to describe all of the M1A/M14/M14S series of firearms. Now you can sell me any spare mags you have for your AIA.Thanks

So the restriction applies to the mag not the gun? I can sort of understand them not wanting me to un-pin a mag built for the M-14, but being able to legally use a 10 rnd mag from an AIA in an M-14 doesn't make sense. Welcome to Canadian gun laws!

Who is permitted to build a 10 round magazine for an AIA? If I could make one from scratch, how would I ensure its an AIA mag and not an M14 mag?

I was just as confused as you are. The restrictions refer to the firearm the magazine was designed for, not what its used in. That's why people are legally using the LAR-15 10 round mags in their AR-15's. The LAR-15 is classed as a pistol so it is allowed a 10 round mag. Also why the AIA Enfield mags are being legally used in some M14 rifles.

Doesn't matter if you understand it or it makes sense, that's what the law says. It's all on the CFC site and in the Firearms Act.

"Designed for" is the significant part.

The same thing that marks the 10 round LAR magazines as "pistol" as opposed to "AR-15". You just stamp it "AIA Enfield" or whatever the CFC calls that gun. Just because it just-so-happens to fit in another gun is irrelevant. It's what the magazine was DESIGNED for that counts in law.

oh and you can't modify the mag to fit another firearm

so if the bolt action 10 round mag needs to have a lug ground down to fit in a semi then the act of grinding it results in you haveing just created a prohibited device

Which leads me to wonder, how come no one in Canada is making 10 round AIA magazines, lots of M14 owners could use 10 round magazines.

Actually the AIA issue is simpler than the LAR-15 one. The AIA mag lacks the square hole to latch the front of the mag into the M14, so they are different mags.

And drilling that hole would make it a prohib device. And yet, people claim it works without the hole?

I'm not sure how it would stay in place without being held by the spring guide, all that is holding the magazine in place is the rear clip thing.
