alright so i just got a norc m-305 and im looking for advice im looking for a list of 10 things i should do right off the hope as far as upgrading it goes.
thanks for your time and consideration

as well if you have any pics to go along with your suggestions that would be greatly helpful
 
have it inspected by a gunsmith - indexing, headspace, left bolt lug ... have it all inspected (by a gunsmith who knows m14)
replace bolt with usgi
replace op rod spring usgi
have fun

There's not really anything you have to do, necessarily. But if you really need to do 10 things right away...

- as Ackehece said, have a good M14 gunsmith check it over for headspace, indexing, etc.
- and/or attend one of Hugry's clinics ASAP
- replace the op rod spring quide
- shim the gas system (if needed to tighten it up)
- read all the threads in here
- USGI stock (bedding it wouldn't hurt, if you know how)
- USGI rear sight (if you will be shooting irons)
- USGI bolt
- USGI trigger group
- work up a good handload for it using appropriate bullets/powders (a tuned handload will give you huge accuracy gains over cheap Russian/Chinese ammo)

have to poke around a bit. I found that you can find 1 piece here and there randomly. wolverine is good, m14.ca, etc - just look once you decide what to do and find that piece you need.. sorry no true 1 stop shops I could find.
US has lots of shops that are full m1/m14 service but their shipping and export is hit and miss.

Well, this is a tough one. The first thing recommended to me was to get a better spring guide. So I did. Then, I shot my little heart's content. It was when I got the itch to tighten the groupings that I started to tweek.

If your front sight is vertical, the rear sight isn't falling apart and everything is running smoothly, why bother, just shoot and have fun. When you get that insane urge to improve, then go with the advice above. Since you are a self-proclaimed noob as well, I strongly encourage you to watch for one of Hungry's drive-by courses in your area. They will provide you with a fantastic wealth of information and confidence to tweek your rifle.
 
Take a look through the Reference Section on my web site as noted below. Tony Ben`s Lubrication Tutorial can be downloaded here.. That`s the first thing you can do right out of the box. Tony`s work is superb. Other tutorials from Tony can also be viewed on Youtube.
 
Why go and spend a ton of. Money like these other people are suggesting? Read the threads, you can learn lots and do most of the upgrades yourself. Spring and guide are cheap and good upgrades, shim the gas system if needed. If you are really worried about the safety of it, pay a smith to check the head spacing etc but really, it is not neccessary for most of these rifles these days. Spend your money on ammo and go have fun with it. New stocks, bolts and expensive other upgrades should be put off until you have learned to shoot the rifle first, not to make up for the shooter's short comings. If you decide after putting 4-5 hundred rounds throuugh it that you want it to shoot better, go for the expensive mods. They will give you some small inprovement in accuracy, you will have to decide if it Is worth it for you personally. Put on some optics for that, just have fun with it!!!

I am strongly of the opinion you should simply get practice in, shooting the rifle, and buy ammo. The above-mentioned deal is good.

Once you've figured out where the system's (the 'you and the rifle' system) at regards accuracy & consistency, perhaps then is a good time to spend up to $400 extra dollars NOT on ammo. Some of the above suggestions are good, but can take up to that amount, total...

jsyk, having done little to my M14s, I know that I can rely on 3-3.5" groups using the stock sights from prone. I've come to that by shooting it; I believe I've put around 600 rounds through it so far, including load development. How does your rifle shoot out of the box?

Never did any of the above stated .. Im at 2000 rounds fired and i can still bust pop cans at 100 yards all day long , cant ask for more from a rifle .. If its not broke dont fix it !!!
 
Good call there Boss. If you want piece of mind, send 3 spent casings to Hungry. He can tell you if there is head spacing issues..

Here's what anyone new to the Norc M14 should do.

First:

Read about the sight system and how it works.

Shoot it with quality ammo.

Take detailed note of its performance.

Then:

Ask yourself what you really want this rifle for.
Do you want it to look like a Call of Duty video game rifle or something or is it just a rifle for hunting, target shooting etc

Start reading stickies and threads on the topic.

This way you will eliminate a lot of the pointless expensive stuff right off the bat.

For every sensical modification you may do to the rifle that will actually make any noticeable difference there's probably 10 that are pointless and expensive for what
you really want the rifle to do in the first place.

This rifle in my opinion can be the biggest money pit in the history of firearms in Canada lol

Like Travis says, this gun can be a money pit.
I changed out the stock for an Archangel only because Im endowed with freakishly long arms and a buggered right hand, so I needed a pistol grip. I put on a scope cos my eyes are buggered and I cant even see the front sight :) And thats it. No springs or other doo dads. Best money spent...Hungrys clinic..tightened that sucker up , and a reloading set up. I would still like to put a bog standard 305 up against a tricked out pimped up 305.....My money says its down to the shooter

Keep it cheap..its way more fun :)

he asked the top 10 things he should/would want to do..
and I stand by my statement... especially the spring and rod if you ever want to change stocks
