My new M-305 has a fair amount of play in the op rod guide. Is any play ok, or should I be driving out the roll pin and trying to install a slightly larger one???

You should try to get it as tight as possible. If the op. rod shifts from left to right, the piston will contact it in different areas and affect accuracy.

I ended up wrapping a piece of s.s. shim around the barrel and tapping the guide down over top of it. Then I put the roll pin in. No movement at all.

I cut the shim so that it didn't overlap but went around the barrel about 85%.

On taking a closer look, I see there is a bit of play around the circumfrence, so I suspect your idea is in order.

I'll have to raid my SHTF supply of stainless steel foil. (better than tinfoil, less brainwave leakage.)

Alot of people put in a bigger roll pin or pound a smaller roll pin inside the original roll pin but I like the idea of the shim since it still keeps the op. rod guide concentric to the barrel.

To decide how much you need, take your feeler guages and stick the biggest one in that will fit. Divide by half and add about .001". That should give you good tightness. Use stainless steel shim rather than brass shim since brass may get eaten by cleaning solvents.

I have different thicknesses of s.s. shim so if you cannot find what you need, P.M. me and I'll send you a bit in an envelope. :)

CGN'ers are the best. I've now had three offers of shim stock.

Instead of using shims, Try using red loc-tite and a new roll pin.

Remove the old roll pin and spread the loc-tite around where the op rod guide sits.

I did one of my M14s with the red loc-tite and rol pin inside a roll pin trick and never had it come loose.......And yes, I was able to remove the guide latter on......;)

SKBY.

Good to know!

A stupid question, but all things being equal, why would you need to remove the op-rod guide if it was on solidly? (Re-park or painting??)

Now you've done it. You can't get new roll pins, you have to buy a new rifle. Send that one to me for disposal. ;)

Home depot would be a good choice if you have enough left of the old one to match up with. If not then someone here like Hungry might have a spare in his toolbox he could be convinced to part with.

How are the Marstar op rod guides? I ordered one with my m305?? Easy to swap out?
Also how easy is it to install the recoil buffer?
Thanks

Actually, the part you ordered Pete is an Op Rod Spring Guide. They are very easy and require no tools. Just be careful not to fling the spring. LOL! When you check it out, you'll know what I mean. The recoil buffer, same deal. You do it at the same time as the Spring Guide. VERY easy. You put the recoil buffer over the spring with the round part facing down (down is up....uh.....because you're holding it upside down.....oh, boy...), put the spring over the spring guide, compress the spring and drop the guide rod back into the slot in the reciever and push the pin back into place. Let the spring put pressure on the housing, and move the recoil buffer up against the reciever (although it will move around.)

;)

As to getting the rifle apart and understanding some stuff about it, download the M1A manual pdf file from Springfield Armoury here http://www.springfield-armory.com/Manuals/M1AManual.pdf it will be a great help, and yes, the M-14S is the same as what you see in there.

Kind of like the buffer spring and guide rod in the C6 GPMG? Mag 58?

Yes, similar to the C6 don't know the Mag 58. It's a rod down the middle of the 'buffer' spring which controls the compression of the spring and also acts as the 'joint' by attaching the spring to the receiver.
Enjoy :)

Forget going to Canadian Tire or Home Depot for Roll Pins as I tried both today.

I had to go to Princess Auto to get a box of 350. Anyone need one? - LOL Now I just need 350 M14's and I'll have gotten my money worth.

That’s Ok because I picked up a great MIG welder while I was there.

I can't help but think every time I purchase something: "I could have had another M14 for this!" - It’s become my currency.

My VW Jetta TDI = 87.5 M14s
My Suburban = this is getting sad.

Yes, I do have a shzt load of roll pins and yes Home Depot sells shzt loads of them for cheap, too.

All of the recommended solutions work. That's the best part about these Norinco-plinkos, we can tinker with them. Kinda hard to break them, well except for the factory roll pins which are as soft as dog krap. LOL

Now, better not ask me to send you a roll pin. You see, I don't even have a single M1 or M1A or M14 or M305 anymore.... I would not remember which size you need for the op rod guide. I just have a box full of the different sizes and lengths. That's what you M14 addicts have to accumulate for yerselves if you are gonna stay in this M14 schtick.

LOL. I immediately thought of that commercial where everything is priced in terms of Wendy's dollar menu. "Your alternator needs to be replaced. That'll be 200 Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers". I like this one much better. "You need a new roof on your house. That'll be 3 M-14S and a White Feather."

WTF, instead of the Toys For Tots campaign, do we need to organize a "Commie Bangstick For Barney" fundraiser???

Say it ain't so Joe!
