M-14 question (probably asked before)??

I was at a local gun shop today, checking out some M305's. I really like what I saw, I just had a couple questions, that probably have been asked before, but I have been looking at older posts for about an hour and I must be looking in the wrong place so I will just ask.

The Black M305 I saw today, had stamped on the reciever .308 why is this? I thought that they were chambered in 7.62x51, and you have to measure your Chinese M14 for proper spacing to be sure that you can fire .308win? Are there Models out there that are just chambered specifically for the .308?

Also if it is a Black M305 that says 308 on the side of the reciever, what year would it be made? and would it be a good model, compared to other Chinese M14s? And is $499 a good deal?

As for your other questions, a lot of people here can answer them with far more authority than i can...so take this with a genereous helping of salt...

I would submit that you can probably fire .308 through your M305 and not have a problem, consider taking it to a gunsmith and having him/her degrease/inspect and check your headspace. You are probably looking at a 2009 production rifle if it is set in a black injection molded plastic stock, it should have a production year stamped on it. As far as i know, they are all supposed to be chambered in 7.62x51 and most have sufficient tolerance for .308

...again, there are people here that know A LOT more then me and someone will likely chime in soon anyhow.

Ya, after seeing the Marstar ones, I think thats a much better deal. Im sold.

Do you just send them a email, and when they come in they will send you one back?

Any Idea when they will be coming in?
 
The Marstar order isn't coming in until June, at the earliest.

Take that under advisement if you want to get some springtime shooting in with your new M14s/M305.

i've done some online research and from what i've read 7.62x51 and 308 are not the same because of the cartrige expansion after ignition....from diagrams i've seen the 308 does not expand as far as the 7.62 so most say it's safe to fire a 308 in a 7.62x51 chambered rifle....but problems have come up trying to go the other way....google it and there are some interesting reports......one shows a catastrophic failure of a m14 firing a 308 but it was not blamed on the cartrige but the load
 
Ya, I know that they are not the exact same cartridge, however pretty much both will work in most cases. I know that whenever someone buys a M305 that they are supposed to have it checked to be sure that it fires .308 safely.

Oh well, I think I might just place a order on one of those M305 so long as its here before October for Moose hunting I can wait.

oh really? thats interesting info to know! so is one more powerful than the other/more accurate in the rifle?
