When last at the range, to keep from losing my reloadable brass, I was shooting with the gas action turned off.
But when I went to cycle the bolt each time, it was jammed and took considerable effort to open it and eject the case.
Yet with the gas on, it cycled normally.

Is this normal?
Rifle is bone stock except for a Marstar stainless oprod spring guide. I was using 150gr American Eagle FMJ.

Once the case has been fired it will have formed to the chamber. This creates resistancewhen you try to extract it. the m14 oprod doesn't have much leverage to pull the case out.

So yes it is normal for it to be hard to extract a fired round.

M14s are tight with the gas off. The part that always seamed odd to me is the gas off position was designed for combat use. Turn gas off crank off grenade. Hide and swear at your rifle while you cycle the bolt. Repeat.

Sure not ideal.

I thought fired brass shrank down a tiny amount instantly after shooting to remove it. Why isn't it as difficult to remove brass from a bolt gun?

The bolt has way more leverage to rotate the case to break tension against the chamber wall. on the m14 when you pull back the oprod handle it needs to cam against the bolt to rotate it, doesn't have much torque:cheers:
