M-14S Op rod guide split pin size

So I take apart my new toy and happen to grab the barrel near the operating rod guide.

Much to my surprise, the guide is loose and wiggles when the op rod is pulled back.

Upon closer inspection the split pin looks like someone took a pair of pliers to it to "reduce" the diamter in order to make it fit in the hole.

This was a deliberate act as both sides of the guide were staked with dimples to hold the pin in place.

Managed to get it out. My question is what size is the Norinco pin suppose to be. Went down to the local auto supply store and 1/8" roll pin appears to be to big. Next size down is too small. 1/8" punch fits perfectly.

I am tempted to purchase a 1/8" x 3/4" long pin and use that as it tightens up the guide nicely.

Question: what size pin is suppose to fit in the hole? Trying to figure out if they miss drilled the hole (hence butcherd split pin). Is it metric?

Have you checked out the M14 Clinic videos? This issue is covered in part 4. Hungry has a real slick roll pin within a roll pin fix.

Reviewed it but wasn't able to determine sizes.

Per a post from Hungry:

"Okay here's the situation.... I often replace the stupid cheesy roll pins that the Kommunists use to secure the op rod guide on the Norinco barrel. I employ a 1/8" diam x 3/4" long roll pin that slides in and out of the existing factory hole (that used to employ a metric pin).

Then I would flare open that pin while it's halfway INTO the op rod guide (hole), FLARE it wider/open with a very specialized 'flaring' tool that only the M14 clinic attendees from the SW Ontario (EESA hosted) session will know

After it's opened up a bit, I will drive in a 1/16" diam x 1/2" long roll pin INTO the 1/8" diameter roll pin. This combination will solve the loose oprod guide problematic to many of the Norinco M14."
