M-305 sights, Is the Garand rear a drop in

I've heard a few mention the Norinco rear sight is a bit fragile. Are the Garand parts drop in???

Yes, a Garand rear sight is a straight swap.No Mods required.

I had a Garand rear sight on my old shorty 14.

I think he is asking about the entire rear sight assembly no(as opposed to just the aperture)?
ie parts #41-45 in that w w w.chestnutridge.com/gpic.asp

As Hungry said, Garands are straight drop ins(occasionally come up on EE or elsewhere for decent money)....M14 sights are metric but tend to command more pocket change for whatever unbeknownst reason.

The garand is a drop in fit as was suggested here allready.
The M14 parts command more money due to supply and demand .There were far fewer M14 made compared to the M1 Garand which # in the 5 to 6 million . The M14 was also the shortest fielded Military weapon in U.S. history except for the 30-40 Krag .
I myself given the choice would rather have the M14 site over the garand ,but I would NOT be willing to pay to much of a difference in price . I would maybee pay, say......$5 more but that is about it .
Please make sure that the elevation pinion has a sharp point on the detent (Little triangular "***" on the elevation drum ) and also check the drum for cracks . These are the 2 most common problem areas on the rear sites . Lots have either cracked drums or the detent is worn or even gone . The detent is what gives you positive clicks on your elevation !

Just curious, but how many of the Garand rear sight parts are suitable for replacing Norinco M-14 parts if they break???

So then I am correct in my understanding that you need to replace the WHOLE rear assy and not just the aperature?

everything right?

You could just change the aperture, but that's not the problem with these sights.

The elevation and windage are the problems, since these are threaded metric, you can't use the Norc base once you switch the knobs.....but you could use the norc aperture and the spring cover, those are the only parts that are usable. GI apertures are $10 - $15 so you might as well change it while you're at it.
