Read the manual on my new Poly and it warns against using civvy .308 ammo as the primers are soft enough to allow a slam-fire. Has this happened to any-one here?

All quasi military rifle manuals say that. It's a CYA thing for the manufacturer's lawyers. Slamfires are caused by improperly reloaded ammo. Usually high primers. Never, in 30 some years, seen one in any rifle.

If you load only from the magazine under spring tension, and not directly into the chamber, you should not have a slam fire in a M14S.

Sunray has the other side of the coin. If you do reload you'll always be looking for high primers and not load them into your rifle.

A few years back I had a slam fire on one of the norcs i have.Round was not loaded single (came out of a full mag)the hammer didn't fall, and it was a federal factory round. No damage to the rifle ,but really is sobering when your rifle goes off when it ain't supposed too. I changed the bolt guts to usgi and handload now with winchester primers.Never changed out the bolt guts on my other 2 norcs and had zero issues with them.

Slamfires can be easily avoided by following a few precautions, regardless of primer type:

-Make sure the firing pin rattles in the bolt when shaken.
-Seat your primers properly.
-Load only from the magazine; do not single load directly into the chamber.

The firing pin should rattle? I thought the firing pin spring should hold it back so that it does not rattle? My understanding of causes of slam fires are high primers (as previously stated in this thread), weak firing pin springs (due to defect or wear), or a broken firing pin. The last two items are the usual suspects as a weak firing pin spring will allow the pin to move forward and strike the primer when the bolt is closed, and a pin that is broken may have a piece that is not held back by the spring when the bolt closes.

I recently bought a M14S and the previous owner put cases of factory ammo through it without any slam fires. As Sunray said, I think it's a CYA thing similar to firearm manufacturers stating use of reloads voids their warranty.

I get a bigger indentation with my Norc M4 on my civvy ammo than my (now departed) M305 on civvy ammo. No issues yet. Of course I always follow *CT* (ACTS) when loading.

You can get slam fires with any WEAPON with a free floating firing pin system, with even factory ammo. I watched an AR cook off a 30 rd mag this way (YEARS AGO WHEN IT WAS LEGAL).

sks, ar, m14... not sure about the cz or ak, but most likely...

Hmm... that's interesting to know. I had heard about ARs being firing pin spring free, but didn't know that many other designs were too. Is there a particular reason so many designs went without a firing pin spring? I'm thinking maybe reliability or cost of mass production?

Its not needed. If it was a problem, they'd fix it.

Yip!.......... I'm not proud to say I had a slamfire the other day also and to top it off a case seperation. As a result I was gathering up the extractor, ejector and spring off the bench. Had to order the plunger and spring for extractor as it is MIA along with the rear 2/3 of the case. Cell phone was on bench and the skin (pastic protective cover) was found a good 12, 15 feet out front of the gun. One last thing I had taken off my safety glasses a couple rounds earlier and had not put them back on when this took place.
:eek::eek:

Any idea of the cause?

Yes I still have both eyes.....when it happend several thoughts passed along with a sense of feeling momentarily sick. I did recieve Some powder burns to the face and I was so gratefull that I did not have to tell the two nieces I had out shooting the day before WITH THERE FULL PPE.....that I lost my vision because I did not have mine.
As for cause.......? the week link was the shooter. No mag was used to chamber a round and the brass had several fireings. I will say a couple more things, I have done some reading in regaurds to using this type of firearm and I am fully aware of the warnings! however a millisecond after the incident I new I let the bolt slam forward and I was......not fully there in the moment meaning my thoughts were preoccupied.
Hope this bit of info can help somebody.;)

My glasses bear scratches from flying parts - proof of their utility and service.

Often, people don't appreciate comments like "where are the safety glasses" when the comments are posted in photo threads.

But glasses are important.

And now you know.
