Slamfires can be easily avoided by following a few precautions, regardless of primer type:
-Make sure the firing pin rattles in the bolt when shaken.
-Seat your primers properly.
-Load only from the magazine; do not single load directly into the chamber.
M14 pattern rifles have a free float firing pin.
Free floating firing pin!?! Hmm... I guess that would increase the probability of slam fires. How many guns have a free floating firing pin design?
sks, ar, m14... not sure about the cz or ak, but most likely...
Hmm... that's interesting to know. I had heard about ARs being firing pin spring free, but didn't know that many other designs were too. Is there a particular reason so many designs went without a firing pin spring? I'm thinking maybe reliability or cost of mass production?
Yip!.......... I'm not proud to say I had a slamfire the other day also and to top it off a case seperation. As a result I was gathering up the extractor, ejector and spring off the bench. Had to order the plunger and spring for extractor as it is MIA along with the rear 2/3 of the case. Cell phone was on bench and the skin (pastic protective cover) was found a good 12, 15 feet out front of the gun. One last thing I had taken off my safety glasses a couple rounds earlier and had not put them back on when this took place.
