M&D MLE info

You have a long magazine Lee Enfield mark I made in 1899 at RSAF enfield.

It saw service in Canada, and was eventually sold out of service.

After it left service, someone marked the receiver and Knox form. I can’t fully make it out, but I think I can read “PEI MIT”.

I suspect it was some sort of organization in Prince Edward Island, perhaps a shooting club?

M&D stands for Militia and Defence. It was what the Canadian department of national defence was known as before WW1.

Nice rifle. Good chance it served overseas in the boer war. The CEF marking in the butt is the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

Nice rifle indeed! She was mine once, I sold her to Jean at P&S Militaria in 2023. Unfortunately the bore was very poor so I traded her off in hopes of finding a better example. The markings on the butt plate stand for 37th Battalion (Canadian Militia) with a rake number. M&D is for Militia and Defense and is a Canadian military property mark. The C double broad arrow means sold out of service. She's marked to the 122nd Battalion C.E.F and she has a DC (Dominion of Canada) marking on the other side of the butt, witch is odd for a MLE.

Hello SSA. The mark on top of the body is Sale Permit - a commercial mark put on in England indicating the service rifle has been approved for comercial (public) sale. As all 40,000 of the Canadian Lee Enfield acquired were dated 1896 chances are the original butt has been replaced with this Canadian example. The previous Canuk info is all correct and to date the 122 CEF
was the only unit known to me to mark their Long Lees used for training at Valcartier prior to receiving the Ross. JOHN

Huh… I didn’t know Jean bought guns from guys to resell, a lot of his stuff comes from importers. Been buying from him for about 20 yrs and it’s never come up.

I've been dealing with Jean since 2009 and am fortunate to live just a few towns over from his shop. From my experience I'd say a large part of Jean's inventory comes from buying from individuals, collectors, estates and cruising local gun shows.
