M&P -15 .22 Or Dedicated .22 upper

I'm looking at getting either a M&P-15 .22 complete rifle or just buying/building an upper for cheap practice.

What are the CGN'rs thought son this, I've shot a friends AR-15-22 and it was great but I'm wondering on if I can save some $ on just getting an Upper or not.

If I build/buy an upper what are the suggestions?

Plus who want's another lower to take up space and another card to carry around?
This is why I never ended up getting a M&P-15 in 22LR.

Next question, who makes- in your opionion the best dedicated uppers, I know I can put one together but if i bought on prebuilt? If I just buy the bolt/carrier conversion thing which one? CMMG or ????

I love my Tactical Solutions dedicated upper and when using Federal bulk pack it will sing all day long, plus it won't gum up your gas tube. Its great for 3 gun rimfire matches.
 
I've been doing most of my .22 LR shooting using a SS CMMG .22 LR bolt kit in my 5.56 chambered, 1 in 7" twist LMT 10.5" barreled upper. With the 1 in 7" twist, .22 LR ammo is not that accurate. [group sizes @ 25 yds with several different brands and types of .22 LR is about the same as 100 yds groups with .223 ammo - 2"- 3" ].

The good news is that, after about 100 rds of initial break in, reliability has been 100 % with the cheap Wally World Winchester copper plated Dynapoint .22 LR bulk ammo.

I tested the same Win Dynapoint .22 LR ammo in a NORC chrome lined 1 in 12" twist AR 15 pencil barrel, and the group sizes at 25 yds shrank to about 1" .
Good enough for practice,
but still about twice the size of what a Ruger 10/22 would do with that same ammo.

As for the S&W .22 LR dedicated AR 15,
I had a conversdastion with a S&W factory depot warranty gun smith,
who REALLY knows his stuff.

He said,
he has seen a LOT of the S&W .22 LR AR in for warranty work.
AND,
that he would NOT recommend them.

Of course,
this is hear say,
and second hand opinions you get on the internet for free,
may be worth much less than you paid for them,
and

MP 15/22 is a poor choice.

They are not cheap.

The quality is uncertain...some work very well indeed, but mine is a piece of ####.

Warranty work in Canada is painfully slow.

Buying a S&W MP 15/22 is the worst firearms purchase decision I ever made.

i kinda like mine..its cheap to shoot, fun to shoot. no problems so far. but i think i'm ready to move up in calibre..
 
I think the bad rap for the MP15-22 in Canada is due to the fact that most all of them up here were the first version shipped from S&W, which did have some issues, and in the USA at least, we subject to a recall (IIRC).

The revised/upgraded models, with the blue springs, etc, I haven't heard any troubles. I know mine is working flawlessly, and so are my friends and the rest of them that I've seen in service.

It's also why I make a point that the models we are selling are NOT the Gen1 versions.

Not posting this as a 'for sale' add, but I do think it's worth pointing out.

The Stainless Steel CMMG kits we sell, also only heard good things. The kit costs about half of the price of the MP15-22, but the 15-22 has a better barrel twist for 22LR than most AR15s. Still fun though.
