M&P 15 mod advice/help

You will need a rail, short gas block and some tools. Small punch / hammer to remove the front sight and AR tool to remove / install the barrel nut. You will also need a torque wrench to set the torque on the barrel nut when reinstalling.

I got everything from True North Arms (https://truenortharms.com)....awesome selection, great prices etc.

I'm looking to remove the front sight and add a quad rail, I'm wondering what parts I will need. Gas block, rail length, etc. Thanks

Why remove the front sight? I get removing the plastic handguard that doesn't have a heat shield but the sight is solid and works well. It's not in the way if you mount an optic either. It vanishes as you use any magnification.

I'm looking to add a rail to my m&p sport but agree on keeping the front sight intact. Just not sure on what would be a good rail to get that fits without modifying the gun

looks good. how long is the hand guard 15 inch ?

Magpul make a hand guard with a heat shield that has MLOK slots to mount accessories and come in a few colours. There are two versions that work with the current gas block that comes with your M&P15. One is longer and has a cut out on the top for the A4 front sight. If you are handy and/or have a friend, no tools required to re and re.

Yes. It is a 15"

Yes, you could, but I preferred the ability to put it back to the factory configuration if I chose too.

Couldn't you cut the FSP off and use the exiting gas block?

Yes, you need to remove it to install the gas block. You should also pickup some crush washers for the flash hider.

So, rail of my choice, short gas block and AR wrench. Do I need to remove the flash hider to get the sight off?

This is an okay model that is MLok rather than Keymod, which I prefer. And it gives you a full top rail and two extra rails.
You can get them at Tenda or Al Flaherty's for about $80.

Just a heads up. My a2 sight was in there real good. Seems they put them in with a hydraulic press. I ended up having to cut the a2 sight with a Dremel to loosen the pins sufficiently to knock them out with a hammer and punch.

I went with a 15" mlok handguard truenortharms.com. I have yet to take it to the range but I'm pleased with the result. Their customer service was very responsive and they shipped very fast. Ordered the related tools from here as well.

Don't forget to order a crush washer for when you have to reinstall the muzzle device. They are one time use.

Canadian tire lends torque wrenches so you don't have to buy one if you don't have on lying around.

I am not sure If you are aware that those pins are tapered. If you are that is very surprising you couldn't get those pins out. I am hoping to take my front sight out hopefully I don't have to do any cutting.

According to a few video guides I've seen, High Desert Tactical being the most reputable, S&W has pushed their pins in from the right rather than from the left like everyone else.

Don't buy a quadrail, there are many better options available that weight a lot less and nobody needs that much rail space.
Depending on the forend you choose you may not need to replace the barrel nut so don't bother buying those tools unless you plan to swap barrels or whatever down the road, at least wait till you pick a forend and know if you need it or not.
Don't cut the front sight off the existing gas block, a low profile gas block is well under $100, do it right so you can be proud of your work not ashamed of how ugly and cheap it looks.
When you swap out your gas block be careful with your installation. You will need to align it left-right as well as maybe space it forward slightly to account for the missing whatever you want to call the thing the factory forend clips into that is pinched between the shoulder of the barrel saddle and the gas block.

Personally on a rifle like that I would leave it stock and spend the money on a case of ammo or a quality optic if you don't already have one. Your call, just my opinion.

Good luck and be sure to post some pictures when you're done.

my gas block was a b!tch to get off as well, and I did know they installed the pins from the opposite side, took some heat and a serious amount of hammer to get the job done.
