M&P .40 or 9mm?

I have decided against getting a Glock. I have nothing against them, but I just would like something different. I kinda have my mind set on a M&P from S&W. From what I have read, it seems like a great pistol. I do not reload yet but I am looking at buying a Lee Pro 1000 loader to get into loading for pistol calibers. I am not a big fan of the 9mm or the 40S&W(I like .45;) ). Which would you choose for the M&P and why? Cost of ammo is not a huge deal to me but by looking at the wholesale sports catalogue it seems like .40 is even more expensive then .45 to reload. That can't be right...

I hate being stuck trying to make a decision between calibers...

40 cal is cheaper to reload than 45. Consider getting a Dillon reloader over a Lee as they are much better quality. Dont waste time shooting 9mm, although its inexpensive for the ammo it lacks power on impact if you like shooting things other than a piece of paper..Just my 0.02.

Well if it helps, the .40S&W in the M&P is very close to the felt recoil of a Glock 17 with some heavier bullets (e.g. 147gr).

I have shot 10rnds through an M&P in .40S&W and I actually thought it was a 9mm version until I saw the box of ammo afterwards - I asked to make sure I was shooting .40S&W and I was.

yeah checked out one on .40 today. Nice lines, good pointer. Only thing I thought was alittle cheap were the sites. Otherwise looks like alot of bang for the buck.

9mm is not enough to knock over metal targets??

9mm is the may to go; there may be a few bucks difference in cost when you buy a boxes, but when we're talking thousands the difference is big. And when you’ll start reloading you can load hotter than factory if you want more recoil.

The main difference between the .40 and 9mm is in the cost ;)

9mm knocks over metal with no problem. I shoot 9mm in IPSC production and have no problem knocking down metal poppers and plates. The decision between 9mm and .40 S&W is based on personal preference and cost.

If we lived in the states and we could carry than it might be more of a question, but in Canada you are shooting paper or metal and both work great.

I think choice on 9mm vs. .40 comes down to whether you reload or not. In IPSC, there seems to be so many people who are shooting really soft .40s that are alot softer than factory 9mm's. So perhaps there is the advantage of being able to shoot either standard or production with a softer round.

factory 9mm ammo is available almost everywhere

Yeah, I noticed last time I was at the local gun shop that they only had 9mm and a few other revolver calibers in stock. That could be the decision maker right there.

If I did get into reloading .40 I could have access to some free brass as the local police are shooting Sigs in .40 S&W. So it could be cheaper for me if I can manage to get hooked up;)

If you love .45, then ypu may want to wait for a bit becasue according to the mp forum, the .45 M&P will release very soon. here is the link:

So the M&P .45 will be released in January. Seeing as the XD-45 was released a while ago and we still have not seen in up here, the M&P .45 is probably still a year away.

I don't think so, since the sound of demanding a .45 of M&P is very high and I believe Smith & Wesson is not that stupid to give away the market. I want a 9mm but I will wait for a while to make sure all the bugs was fixed like the front sight loose or broken striker. Man this gun is very attractive.

If I was going to set up to reload it would be for 45acp. For now I am happy with 9mm.

Is it just me or is this 'new' S&W M&P just a rehashed 'Sigma'? Just can't see myself getting one anytime soon, in any available ctg...

^ even if it is I don't have a problem with it; newer Sigmas aren't bad guns...

I haven't had a chance to handle one (M&P), but I think they are good gooking guns, I just got a Steyr a few weeks ago so probably won't buy it (or any other gun) any time soon, but I'd get the M&P over a Glock or XD...

I don't think management at S&W are fools. They must've figured there was a market for a 'new version' polymer gun. Geez, they were even smart enough to get into the 1911 market... :p

Did you ever find that 1911 plunger spring you were asking about before?

I did find a couple online stores that sell 'em but I haven't bought anythging yet. (I was thinking ahead and don't immediately need one)

Hi IM_Lugger, I am also very interest on the Steyr M-A1 9mm, how they shoot and the back up of repairing service in Canada? Are they easy to strip?
