Hey

I am considering a trade, and I am curious on how reliable these pistols are. Does any one have negative experience? I was reading that some people where having warranty issues. I don't want to deal with warranties at all. What are reliable alternates to a M&P45 with a spotless record? I love the ergonomics of the M&P45, and hence the reason I cant stand the glock 21 even if it is more reliable. Why use a gun that does not fit my hand?

How does a HK compare fit wise? I know 1911 are good, but low ammo count and double stack are bulky.

Thanks

If the gun doesn't fit your hand, you'll always be fighting it. That's the reason I don't have a Glock. I don't think they're bad pistols, they just don't fit me.

My M&P45 has been great from day one. Accurate and comfortable, two things a firearm must be. Throw in an Apex kit and the trigger goes from OK to WOW!  Can't help about the HK, but could you clarify the last line in your post?

Is it you don't like the 7 round mags? You want a double stack? ??? ???

You will ind a lot of info at the M&P forum. Both good and bad and the different revision models.

I have one without the mag safety. Early ones had issues with the safety breaking as it is just a thin metal strip the metal mags push against when inserted. Also, although the slide is stainless and melonite finished there were some rust issues. The roll pins in the frame holding the trigger group in have also been known to walk out after 100 rounds or so.

Mine has been reliable, and without issues regarding ammo. My pins do walk out, and I have replaced them. It still happens sometimes. Although I clean after every session, it did show a small area on the slide around the front sight that needs extra cleaning to keep the surface rust down. Not a huge spot or issue and doesn't affect function.

I also have a Glock 21. For me, the softest shooting .45 I have ever owned. 100% reliable and more accurate than the M&P. Grip is big but not an issue for me. New ones come with three grip sizes. As for warranty, well you can get Glock parts at a lot more places than M&P parts and there are more Glock armours around also. Which do I shoot most? Glock 21.

Check out the forum. Lots of info from regular shooters and armourers etc.

Hope that helps.

The Glock is not more reliable than the M&P, I have the M&P45 and M&P9. 500 rounds through the 45 and 2500 rounds through the 9 and never had failure to fire or eject. I only hope the G21 I bought is as reliable.

Had one. Liked it but hated the useless thumb safety on the model I had.

I got to shoot a buddy's USP and, for me, the M&P fit better especially with the smallest backstrap enstalled.

I don't think you will go wrong if you do get it.

I like 1911 but the single stack only holds 7 to 8 rounds. Double stack 1911 are just as uncomfortable as a glock 21.

I've shot a lot (close to 30,000 rounds) of ammo through M&P's - 2x9's and 1x45. The 45 M&P is an excellent pistol, accurate, reliable and easy to shoot well. I had no issues with mine while using 200 SWC, 230 Ball, and 230 Hydra Shock. The trigger on the 45 is slightly heavier than the trigger on the 9 out of the box, but there's an Apex Sear for the 45 (highly recomended) so it's an easy fix. There should be no M&P45's new in dealers that have any of the early teething problems of the M&P series as a whole - in part because the M&P45 wasn't really available in Canada until after the majority of those issues were solved, and in part because those problems were solved 4 years ago. Sear flutter is NOT an issue on the M&P45 due to the different geometry of the 45 trigger mechanism and sear.

Is there a handgun with a spotless record available? I've never heard of one and if there is I would like to purchase a few.

The M&P is near the top of the pile when it comes to polymer pistols.

P.S. Watching a series called "Tales of the gun" (10 years old now, jeez) teaches you that all the legendary firearms hit bumps along the way. Some more than others.

I have a opportunity to get a M&P45 with out a safety switch, and it will fire empty. Is that legal for Canadian IPSC?

I have a M&P 9mm love the grip had the same problem with glocks not fitting my hand never had a problem with my 9mm simple to clean shoots really good only thing is the recoil is a bit high normal for a polymer gun. the only thing I don't like is the trigger I find it to spungy after trying a CZ Shadow I an going to swith for IPSC.

I had an opportunity to buy a minty used M&P45 for a great price. I'm sure it would have served me well but I did not like the "fishy" look of it. I also fondled the Glock 21SF but did not like the slippery feel of the grip.
I'm glad I waited for the Gen4 Glock21!

Smith & Wesson® Converts Two State Agencies to the M&P Pistol

Massachusetts State Police and Vermont State Police Select Smith & Wesson M&P Pistols

SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Dec. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (NASDAQ: SWHC), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., a U.S.-based leader in firearm design and manufacturing, today announced that it has received contracts from the Massachusetts State Police and the Vermont State Police for new duty firearms from the M&P Pistol Series. The Massachusetts State Police has selected the M&P45 pistol, while the Vermont State Police has adopted the M&P40 pistol as its new service firearm. Both of the statewide law enforcement agencies have initiated the transition process and Troopers are currently using the M&P pistol in the field.

Massachusetts State Police

As the nation's oldest statewide police agency, the Massachusetts State Police has a rich history of service to its citizens and support of national events. Employing over 2,300 Troopers and 400 civilian support staff, the agency is responsible for criminal law enforcement and traffic vehicle regulations across the state. To better assist its Troopers with these responsibilities, the Massachusetts State Police has ordered 2,500 M&P pistols chambered in .45ACP.

During the agency's independent testing and evaluation process, the M&P45 was judged against the department's previously standard sidearm, as well as numerous other competitive products. At the conclusion of the trial, the M&P45 was selected due to its ergonomic design, accuracy, reliability, and the pistol's ability to be customized to meet individual preferences. Smith & Wesson will support the firearm contract with a full range of services including armorer's training. In addition to the M&P45 pistols, the Massachusetts State Police previously adopted the M&P15 tactical rifle from Smith & Wesson that currently serves as the State issued patrol rifle.

"We are extremely pleased with the decision by the Massachusetts State Police and the Vermont State Police to transition to the M&P pistol," said Mario Pasantes, Smith & Wesson's Senior Vice President of Marketing and Global Professional Sales. "We take pride in supplying law enforcement professionals with highly advanced, duty proven equipment, and we believe the M&P Series lives up to that standard. Selected for numerous awards and trusted by both officers and civilians, the popularity of the M&P pistol has been enduring. Today, over 800 law enforcement agencies have adopted or approved for duty use our M&P products. Our commitment to those who have put their trust in Smith & Wesson is steadfast."

Pasantes added, "We are especially honored to serve the Massachusetts State Police, our home state force. Our employees take great pride in aligning with local law enforcement, and we look forward to expanding our relationship with the Massachusetts State Police and to seeing the M&P45 on the hips of our State Troopers."

Vermont State Police

Through its contract with Smith & Wesson, the Vermont State Police has ordered 390 M&P40 pistols. During its open evaluation process, the M&P40 pistol received high marks by the Vermont troopers for its low perceived recoil, reliability during testing, and consistent performance. The new side arms are being supported with a full range of services from Smith & Wesson, including armorer's training and advanced firearms training courses.

ye I just picked up a minty used m&p 45. Only trigger safety and will fire with mag released. Looking forward to it!

I have the M&P 9mm and love it. Great Gun, compact, easy to shoot, and fits my small - fat - hands. If I was to get a polymer .45 it would be the M&P.
