I, myself, have not experienced the mag dropping issue. If it is a known problem, S&W will take care of you for sure as they offer great customer service.
As for the slide closing when you slam in a mag. It will do this 100% of the time if you hit hard enough and at the right angle. You can slam all day straight up (perpendicular to the slide) and the slide will not close. Any moderate force at an angle of about.. I would guess 30-45 degrees from perpendicular and the slide will close 100% of the time. You kinda have to hit up and forward to get this feature to work.
Oh and it is a feature and not a defect. The Shadow has this feature. Glock 34 too. HK P30/HK45 do it. I believe the Beretta 92 does as well. I'm sure there are others but I'm just naming some well known and popular guns so people know it's not a defect.
