Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my brand new M&P. it will not eject the empty mag with the slide open. This is obviously a pretty big pain when trying to do speed reloads. It looks as though the slide release is suppose to catch on the magazine follower after the last round is fired, but instead the follower is slipping past the catch which prevents the magazine from dropping free. Any have an ideas or should I just be contact the company?

Nope. All 4 I own do that. The mag drops free fine with rounds in it. But that's because the rounds push the follower down. Once the mags empty then the tab on the slide stop jams against the side of the follower and won't allow it to drop free. This is a defect I guess?

Ill try but I'm limited by the iPad camera. It doesn't seem like a mag spring is too long because the problem occurs with 4 different mags. It's like the small tab on the slide stop is in the wrong spot? Can anyone else take a photo of their m&p with the slide off and an empty mag in? I'd like to see what it's suppose to look like

The mag follower is overriding the slide stop and getting stuck.
The problem could lie with either or both parts.
Try a few other mags and see if it happens with them as well before you change the slide stop.
Is this a new gun ?
If not then thumb pressure under the slide stop can cause this premature slide lock.
Address the problem to the dealer who sold it to you, or you can try to bend the tab...

It's not the mag. I've tried 4 different ones. I guess I'll call the dealer Monday. Just sucks to open a brand new pistol and have issues with it right out of the box.

That video is painful.

OP - your slide lock should ride on the platform at the left leading edge of the follower, instead it's missing the platform and getting stuck into the side of the follower. Since it does this with 4 different mags, the problem is probably that the metal extension on the slide lock, that's supposed to lift it into position on an empty mag, is too short. You need a new slide lock assembly, or you need to bend the arm inward, so that the arm does engage the platform. Guess which one doesn't involve sending the gun to a warranty centre? Just use a pair of needle nosed pliers and work slowly. If it breaks, no harm - you needed a new one anyway.

good luck bending the part yourself. they are heat treated parts so bending it will probably break it. from your pics, it's out of spec. contact S&W and get a new one.

And good luck trying to get S&W to send you a slide stop lever assembly. They won't send you one. They will want you to send the gun to a Canadian warranty depot to have it changed out. You're better off ordering one from Brownell's for $17.96 and change it out yourself. They have them in stock.

Looking at those pictures - it seems there's something odd about the way the mag is sitting in the well, like it's 'leaning over' to the trigger bar side of the well. I don't have mine in front of me, but I'll check tomorrow. I'm sure mine are more centred than that. Are those mags correct for the calibre (sounds dumb, but some folks do try to use 40 S&W mags in a 9mm). Something just doesn't look right about that. I'll compare mine in the AM and maybe post a picture to show you what I mean.

I took some photos of my gun, from the same angles as the ones you took. Forgive the sub-par picture quality, all I had on hand was a 3 year old Blackberry.

Like enefgee said, your slide stop catch is not sitting on the follower properly (as it is on mine). When the gun's assembled, that slide stop catch compresses the follower slightly and provides the necessary spring pressure to pop the magazine out.

I'll also note that your follower is slightly different than mine. On mine, the left part that's raised tapers to an edge, whereas the left side of your follower is flattened. I don't think it should make a functional difference though, considering the slide stop catch is supposed to sit on the front left flat portion (which looks the same).

Thanks everyone for the help. Ill contact the dealer first thing Monday and see what they think. I'm hoping I can just exchange it for a new one because the sights shot super low too, but that's probably wishful thinking. If not, I'll do my best to acquire I new slide stop and give that a try.

Come on the frames and internal parts in the frame on the M&P 9MM and .40cal are identical.

To the OP check your mag release. It is easy to take out, instructions are in the manual that came with the gun. Check to see if there are any burrs on the nag release that are carching on the mag. If you have a gunsmith close to where you live have him look at it. I doubt there is much wrong and there is likely an easy fix.

Take Care
