M&P or Spingfield XD??

Check out the current M&P thread, it may or may not help. I recommend the 9mm M&P for your first HG. Buy the range kit and save $ with 9mm vs .45

Split the difference......get the Springfield XD 40 , I have a 40 cal. that I shoot in IPSC and it is a great gun , a very popular cal. in IPSC shooting......

Try them again before you decide, it's all personal preference. I tried the M&P 40 and an XD 40 and I preferred the XDM and is now my go to pistol. If money is an issue I think the XDM is more expensive by a 100 or so. I did picked up a m&p 22 on Monday, which seems like a great little shooter but that will be determined on the weekend. Don't rush, check them both out again

I would say the m&p9. The grip safety in the xd is dumb, also from what I have seen the springfield is more expensive. Not sure why

XDM 9 is a beautiful gun. Well worth the money

But you can't go wrong with an M&P either. I don't know if I'd buy a regular XD when the M is readily available

If you get a new M&P 9MM it will have a 1 - 10 twist barrel which is an improvement over their 1 - 16 twiat. Mine are the slower twist and none will shoot the 147 gr bullet worth a darn. The slower twist rate just doesn't want to stabilize the heavier bullet. They do like the 125 gr bullets though and that is what I shoot.

Do not get a .40 for your first pistol... it is way too snappy to start with. 9mm is a good way to get to make a bang cheaply and easier to train with (less recoil), work on breathing, trigger control and sight picture on a 9mm to start then buy a .45....
Bothe the m&p 9, and the xd 9 are good pistols... buy the one that fits your hand best.

Looking at getting my first handgun, either 9mm or 45acp. Have shot both the M&P and XD, but not enough to really base a good opinion on each. Wondering what you guys think is the better bang for the buck?

1st I'd stay away from the 45. You need to develop good habits and that's easier to do with lighter recoil. 9mm is also cheaper to shoot.
2nd, does it have to be a plastic gun? The M&P are easy to shoot (at least I find them easier to shoot well than Glocks). But want something even easier? Try a CZ 75 SP01 Shadow (9mm). A little more money but also a little more heft and more accurate for most shooters.

XDM looks a lot better made than MP9-40-45 (mp22 are made by Walther, a lot better quality in parts). The xdm looks a lot better than mps except I do not like the plastic slide rails on the frame (although there is no reported issues with this, I have a personal preference for all steel rails).

I believe that Larry Vickers refers to the XD as the "Bubba Gun".

Besides their durability shortcomings, spare parts are not readily available.

I have shot the M&P and found it to be accurate and comfortable in the hand. The standard 3 dot sights were ok but I remember thinking if it were my pistol I would change them out. Trigger was ok and pretty standard for a combat pistol. XDM line comes with a match barrel and trigger which I find to be very nice on my XDM 45, so much so that I am planning on buying a XDM 9mm in the near future.

My experience with the XDM is in 45 but I have been very pleased with the quality, trigger is good right out of the box. I was not a big fan of the grip safety and prior to owning one was not interested in this feature. Now that I own one I can say the grip safety does not bother me at all, it is very light to depress and certainly not a factor when being shot, you don't even notice it while shooting. The sights on the XDM are 3 dot but have horizontal groozes like a target sight and present a excellent sight picture as they are.

Both pistols are keepers, I would recommend the XDM with stainless slide over the M&P. To me the XDM line has some great safety features. With the striker condition indicator and loaded chamber idicator you know the condition of the pistol at a glance. Someone else mentioned the Glock 17 which I also prefer over the M&P; with a ghost ultimate trigger my Glock is my go to gun but the XDM is attempting to take that postion. I'm willing to bet over time you will pick up them all.

StrikerSW what makes the stainless slide of your XD better than the M&P's stainless slide?

KevinB makes a telling comment.

Virtually all modern pistols today are accurate, dependable side arms. Some work better in certain applications than others and there are lots of ties. It boils down to personal preference. On price alone the FS packaged with the range kit is probably his best bang for his buck.

XDM all the way.

Lot's of people don't know, the pistol is not made by Springfield, it's actually made in Croatia imported by Springfield. It's also the standard issued pistol of there army (an older 4inch version) Xd and XDM are basically upgraded version. XDM as an amazing stock trigger I read and heard many people confirming that the stock trigger is better then the glock (I personally just love it).

I bought a few pistol and sold them until I got the XDM and it's a keeper (I had a Sig P226 then a G17 then a HK P2000 and finally the XDM)

About the grip safety: don't bother you don't feel it.

Price well you pay for what you get! I mean that for 100$ differences get what feel better in your hand.

That being said: Forget every opinion and comment that people made. They are both good pistol and you can't go wrong get the one you prefer and keep it!
