my Glock 17 gets taken out of the safe maybe once a year since i started shooting M&P's.
while we could start a back and forth about which is better it would as always turn into the never ending fight over what platform is better.
but i must insist that we qualify your statement by issuing a rebuttal - maybe its not the gun.... maybe its the shooter.

now, before you voice your rebuttal to mine i would like the record to show that i am in fact rubber and you are by all reports glue, so whatever you say to me will undoubtedly bounce off and by sheer will power on my part stick to you.

keep in mind that those come with a 3rd mag ($50 value) and night sites ($150 value)

so while you can buy a new one for $150 more you could not buy a new one with an extra mag and night sights for that price.

that said i wouldnt buy one, buying a plastic gun that is a known police buy back so you know its been used plenty.
any time you use plastic a lot it gets weaker, that goes for any plastic.
 
I'm gonna take a swing at the OP.

Plastic guns are great and just the ticket for cops. They can't be beat - the guns get the hell beaten out of them just from being clunked and banged about as the cops go about their duties in sun, rain, sleet and worse. Glock...? S&W...? Misc...? Doesn't matter, they're all plenty good for what your average cop has to do - namely, dump a few rounds in your centre of mass from 25 yards in.

From a manufacturing standpoint though, building a top notch plastic gun is as tough and costly as doing it with metal. That is why an HK USP Tactical goes for ...what, these days? I paid around $1400.00 for mine about 8 years ago. For chit house gun fighting/IPSC work the Glocks and Smiths will keep up with it just fine.

My HK will barely get away when it comes to slow fire precision work...and even then it is a very close call and touch and go. I can't afford to get too smug about that because last year some boys (probably one of you slobs) kicked my butt all over the range with a Glock in that new-fangled .45GAP round. (I'm STILL mad about it!!!).

This is just my opinion but it is my conviction that we are not training our cops with proper marksmanship skills or tactical training. Fact is most of us bums right here on the forum can probably out shoot the local law enforcement around here...(but you didn't hear me say that!!!). If I had my way our cops would spend a couple weeks at Gunsite or in some similar training program just for starters. If you are going to carry a gun and enforce law or protect life and limb with one - you should at least be proficient with it.

But what do I know...? I'm just a gun-club stubfart...
 
The only after market part on mine is the sear - everything else is S&W factory, with some touch ups. 4 lbs clean and crisp, nice smooth take up, nice clean break. Here's a tip, before you go reinventing the wheel, take the gun apart, clean and degrease the parts, polish the things that rub on other things, put it back together.

Sage advice. Replacing the USB with an Apex part and install a lighter trigger return spring will give you a very nice trigger as well at little cost.

I took mine out, chucked in the Dremel and polished it up (which took the shoulder down a little) - but yes, the Apex part is very nice, I had one in an M&P45.
 
Had a M&P with a Apex aluminum trigger and kit and still could not shoot it well enough. Tried a friend's Glock and it was the best I every shot. Sold the M&P and bought a Glock.

The trigger "issue" with Glocks is entirely the shooter and their inability to shoot. The M&P trigger is very mushy with sloppy reset and the geometry of the trigger changes due to the hinged design. The common response from M&P owners is to change the trigger to an APEX one. That would be a clue about the design. Seeing as S&W has attempted to copy Glock on three occasions, I would say the original design(Glock) has a lot going for it as the M&P isn't that different. To hear people complain about Glocks then praise the M&P is comical.

Your money, your choice..

The bad ergonomics and BTF from Glock are enough for me to stay with M&P.
And what is this Glock trigger you are talking about?
 
As someone who learned to shoot on the 1911 platform, I had a great deal of difficulty learning the Glock trigger. For some reason I adapted to the M&P trigger quite quickly.

What is BTF?

The Glock trigger would be the stock trigger they come with. A classic two stage trigger with a defined "wall" or break point and a positive short reset point. The M&P offers nothing over a Glock and has a minute reputation compared to Glock.

Brass to face.

I personally dont have issue with Glock triggers so it doesn't really apply to me.
