I see some pistols have the white writing on the side and some don't in regards to the gun firing without a mag. Which version is the more recent and which is the older one?

None of them are factory (except possibly the M&P22) - they've been filled by the owner, normally with white grease pencil.

That's not true at all, my M&P 9 has that written on the side in white writing and it certainy isn't with a grease pencil. It is white paint from the factory.

As far as which is newer / older, no idea.

I believe the one with the markings on the side are those that do not have the mag disconnect, it reads something like "this pistol is capable of firing without a magazine". With or without is up to you, as is the safety lever.

If you're talking the safety warning, they're both recent models. They have to warn you that if you're going to be a dumb a$$ and just yard on the trigger anytime, some models will go bang with the mag out.

Have mine right here and it goes like this "Caution Capable of Firing With Magazine Removed" that's my M&P 9

The M&P Pro does not have the Mag Disconect in it from the factory. Some Standard M&Ps that have been modififed with aftermarket parts have also had the Mag Disconect removed as well. It is my understnading that the Pro Series are the only M&Ps that do not come from S&W without the Mag Disconect...

The m&p comes in a couple different configurations per cal.
Most of which are safety differences.
You can get them with no safeties, external or internal.
You can get them with internal only.
And of course the ones that have none.

I run the ones that have none, either internal or external.
My father runs the ones that have the internal mag disconnect or but no external.

HIS has the writing on the side in white that states that his can not fire without a mag.
MINE has writing on the side that states they of course can fire without a mag.

I know my .22 one has white filler writing in the M&P 22 on the front of the slide but my 9, 40 and 45 don't have that highlited at all on the sides. So maybe that is what you are seeing?

I'll look see if I have a pic loaded up that shows the difference.

Is that maybe what your talking about with the 22 one having the slide writing and the S&W symbol colored in white?

Funny story about the warning:
My friend was out photographing an IPSC shoot a few years ago. He comes up to me and shows me a pic he took. You can clearly see the warning on the slide, and his comment was "How dumb is this. No sh!t that the gun can fire with no mag!!"
Despite him growing up around guns (res and non) I had to explain the mag safety crap on some pistols, and hence the warning.
Full 5 second pause after explanation "....that's just f*ckin' stupid!"
Yep

Sorry for Hijacking the thread but how are the M&P9's I am new to restricted and what I have shot so far in 9mm has been amazing. I know people on this forum have mixed feelings about polymer firearms.

I am looking at:

M&P 9
Glock 17
CZ SP01 Shadow (I know its not polymer)

Just want to see how it all adds up and hoping to get some perspective.

You were the first owner and it came that way? Like enefgee, I thought all M&P 9s came with unpainted lettering.

I am the second owner, but the lettering for "Caution - Capable of firing with the mag removed" is not sunken in to allow the use of a grease pencil to fill them in, it is painted on.

Handle all 3, if you get the chance, shoot all 3. Pick the one that you like the feel of best. IMO Glock and S&W make very comparable guns, quality wise. You need to determine which one fits your hand best. I can't give an opinion on the CZ, I've never handled one.

Thanks for the info - I have handled all 3, and shot only the CZ. The CZ shoots great, its accurate. I am looking for a reliable 9mm target pistol.

The glock seems narrow for my big hands, the M&P feels good - but they each have adjustable back straps I haven't tested.

None of them feel bad at all, they actually feel really nice.

The Glock and the S&W are cheaper out of the gate and I know you get what you pay for but I am not looking for a competitive handgun (not yet anyway)

I can try to see if I can flag down a Glock / S&W owner at the range and see if I can shoot it but any input would be great on reliability ammo likes / dislikes for each.

I've owned M&P's back to pre-Rev H. in 9mm and 45 acp. M&P's (other than the 22 - which is not made by Smith and Wesson) do not come from the factory with white filled lettering on the left side of the slide. There is a gold coloured lettering on the right side of the gun that tells you that it will or will not fire with the magazine removed, this lettering is not engraved into the slide.

I think you'll be happy with any of these - pick the one that feels best. I bought the CZ Shadow for my first, super reliable, accurate, and the trigger is amazing. Seriously it will set your standard of what a nice trigger should feel like ridiculously high. I found the weight of the steel pistol helped with recoil and accuracy as well. I bought an M&P later on and it's a great gun as well, totally different animal though, much lighter, different trigger & striker fired. I'm happy with both, both are super reliable and neither is fussy about ammo. I'm more accurate with the Shadow but I expect both guns are more accurate than I am. Personally I don't like the angle of the grip on the Glock, but it's a good gun too.
