I was looking at picking up a M&P 9mm with range kit. This will be my first pistol and I want to get into some comp shooting in the future.

My 1 and only concern is that trigger? It does not seem to be all that sturdy, with it being plastic how are they holding up? Is it something you just "get used to?"

I love the feel of a 1911 trigger but I love the ergos of the M&P. There is a lot of things I love about the M&P come to think of it. Its just the trigger that worries me.

Is there an aftermarket trigger that you can pick up?

What are you guys doing with the trigger, are you running stocl set ups?

Thanks in advance

I have never heard of an issue with the M&P trigger. It certainly is not fragile and works fine. Anything can break but the M&P is not designed to if that is your concern. Guys have thousands of rounds through their guns without any broken triggers to my knowledge.

22,000+ rounds, at least 3 total tear downs and re-assembles and half a dozen partial teardowns - trust me if it was breakable, I'd have broken it by now - no issues. Get the Apex sear and firing pin block (Dillon or Brownells), unless you're shooting in a class that doesn't allow any mods to the trigger, if you are shooting in such a class, shoot it a lot and it'll smooth right out.

Trigger strengh

May want to refrain from using it as a pry bar or as a leverage point for popping beer caps. Have 50k rounds through mine with some hard a## training sessions that are work related an no probs with a polymer trigger.

As long as you don't use the M&P trigger to pry open your f&*ked-up Norinco, it should outlast you.

IMHO - Which nobody cares about, but they keep asking for, anyway...

;)

Haha thats great guys thanks. I'm not 100% sure what I will be shooting comp wise. I am still so new to it. I just want the option of using this gun to compete. By the sounds of it I should LOVE this gun. Now just need to wait for it to arrive at my door

Again Thanks guys

While many are leaving their M&P just as it came from the factory, many others are choosing to use some parts made by Apex Tactical, who make parts and drop-in trigger kits designed to produce whichever type of trigger the owner desires. The Apex COMPAEK is intended for target shooting. The Apex DCAEK is suitable for duty and carry. Both are available from Brownells. The Apex FSS is the latest variation, rated for competition, and - unlike the COMPAEK and DCAEK - it incorporates an aluminum replacement trigger. (While it is not in the Brownells catalog, Brownells will special-order an Apex FSS kit for you if you ask them.) The Apex FSS is valued at more than US$100., so whichever licensed exporter you would choose to buy it from will need you to first get an IIC from DFAIT (just to start the legal export permit process with U.S. DOS DDTC).

I had several m&p in 40's and 45. All the triggers sucked from factory. My 45 came with a 12 lb. Trigger!
I love the feel and look of the gun, but the factory trigger just plain sucks.
I bought a m&p trigger and spring kit from dillon. (the reloading guys) They ship to Canada and what a difference!
I took it down to 4 lbs. and fell in love. I had a new gun.
It is now my favorite gun to shoot, and I can actually hit something.
Highly recomend the kit. It's easy to install and makes it into a entirely new gun.

Apparently there's a new "tactical" trigger assembly from S&W that is on par with what Apex offers.

I have a Apex DCAEK but without the USB as I cant get my rear sight off. Damn screw is stripped.

Replacing the trigger with the Apex version puts you into ESP in IDPA and Standard shooting minor for IPSC if that matters. The kit, without the replacement trigger is allowed in IDPA SSP and ESP. Not allowed in IPSC Production.

Thanks everyone. You really put my mind at ease, I think the first thing to get has got to be a trigger kit. I am not a fan of the stock trigger on them. It feels gritty to me.

Thanks

If I were you I would put 1K rounds through the gun before I spent money on the trigger kits. You may find it smooths out to your liking and you can spend the money on more ammo.

SHOT Show M&P Apex

While I was at the SHOT Show this year, at the S&W booth, I wanted to see what was new with the M&P's. Unfortunately, everyone on the floor was busy so I walked around the booth, looking at the displays.
One display I saw had an M&P on the top shelf. Wondering why it was there, I took a closer look. You can imagine my shock when I looked at the slide. It had all the typical S&W M&P stuff but there also was "APEX" engraved on the slide, right side.
I finally got to talk to a S&W rep and asked about the Apex engraved M&P. He said "he never heard of it and S&W was not using Apex stuff." So I drew his attention to the display and pointed out the Apex engraved M&P. He couldn't believe his eyes and could not give me an explanation of why that M&P was engraved and on display.
That's not all that was strange at the S&W booth. Brousing their new 2012 catalogue shows that Smith is making 3 different barrel length 686's in 38special +P. I kid you not..
