M&P15-22: Any issues I should know about before purchasing?

So I think I've done my due diligence searching for a review thread on this rifle and havn't yielded any results, soooo....

Is this rifle a good buy as a fun little plinkster? Any glaring issues or malfunctions? Was considering an ISSC MK-22 but have seen 50/50 reviews on it (half seem to have had little or no issues with it, others are plagued with FTE's and FFF's...) Opinions?

I'd go with the Ruger SR22 with the high cap Ruger brand mag.

It's a known quantity, and you can 't beat the 10/22 internals.

How about only taking your M&P15-22 to the range ONLY... meanwhile Id have to agree with the above post, SR-22 all the Non-Restricted way!!!

But if your OK with RANGE ONLY for whatever .22 you desire, its a great little rifle for sure... :D

I also think this thread would be better suited in the Rimfire section perhaps too ;)

I absolutly LOVE mine! Goes bang everytime! I'm up to approx 3000+ rounds and the only stoppages I've had are from duds from buying bulk cheapy rounds. Simple to clean, it also has the functioning charging handle/bolt catch/ and fire select!!! (Some other AR style .22's don't have those functioning features)

I find it to be very very very accurate with the sights it came with and the strikefire I put on her. Also it is made from a extremely strong polymer so it is light!!!

Only downfall some would say (I personally don't give a sh!t) is how the original 25rnd S&W mags designed for it are now considered a prohibited device by CFC/RCMP, so those are limited to 10rnds because they fit a pistol variant 15-22. But if that is an issue for you, you can get aftermarket 25rnd mags or even a 50rnd drum to fit which is perfectly legal somehow but the original is not. (I've done a lot of research on this matter and spoke with very key people who confirm that)

So all in all I am in love with my 15-22 and have nothing negative to say whatsoever.

Quality of the firearm is one issue, and where you would like to shoot it is another.
My rifles really like fresh air and to go for walks - hence, the S&W is not an option for me.

They are garbage, and S&W's warranty service in Canada is ####.

There is no aftermarket parts support, so you can't fix issues yourself.

Plus, even if yours works, mags are pinned to 10 rounds.

I consider buying my 15-22 to be THE WORST firearms purchase I ever made.

I'd go with the Ruger SR22 with the high cap Ruger brand mag.

The Ruger BX-25 magazine was advertised as fitting both the 10/22 rifles and the charger pistol. Therefore, the RCMP deems the magazine to be a pistol magazine and it must be pinned to 10 rounds to be legal here. There are lots of quality non-Ruger magazines though.

Thanks for the input, I'll be going with the Mossberg .22 tactical instead (cheaper and non-restricted FTW!) And yes, my next .22 LR thread will be going in the rimfire section ;)

Good lord, no one actually suggested that did they?

If you buy the Mossberg, you'll like it at first. You'll shortly realise it's cheap junk and buy an SR-22.

If you buy an SR-22. You'll be happy with it. I'm so happy I have a second on the way.

Save the $300 and just go buy the SR-22 to begin with.

If you mean by junk as in plastic. Then yes. Do you own one? I own both the flat top and the carry handle. Yes it's plastic but shoots as good as an SR-22 or even better. Plus it's half the cost. Another thing is most people who own an sr-22 drop another $300-$600 on upgrades. Yes this is up to the individual but most do. So you have to now look at owning a rimfire that costs over $1000!
As for the M&P, if it wasn't restricted and caped to 10 rounds, my guess is alot more people wouldn't be so quick to dis it!

We went from strong competitors like ISSC, Ruger, and S&W... And now the OP is going with a Mossberg?

I think I'm going to sharf all over this thread...

####e is the Mossberg really that bad? I guess I should have expected it from the price point... so the overwhelming opinion for a non-restricted .22LR black rifle seems to be the Ruger SR22, and for $500 not a bad buy. Thanks for the opinions guys.

How is the ISSC a strong competitor? From what I've seen every 3rd round FTE's, the screws on almost every part come loose after short use, and the fast stock wiggles around when 'locked' in place... did I miss something with this rifle?

There was a lot of hype about them a while back where I live, and I never really heard anything bad or done any research because I don't own one or care to since already have my plinkster. I've handled the ISSC only once and I think we had maybe a dozen or less FTE out of a box of 525 on our range trip. It was also brand new so never seen these loose or wiggle issues that develop over time that you mentioned?

You could probably say my view on the ISSC is erroneous since I've only handled it once and she was brand new and never got to see these issues...

But one thing I will say with confidence is the S&W and the Ruger are quality items!!!

The Mossberg is not a bad rifle. Some guys have this thing against plastic. I think it's compensating for their present girlfriend. I've shot the Tactical at DVC many many times and it's always been a decent rifle. We've put 600rds through it in an evening without so much as a FTF or FTE and the guys there like to brag how they never clean it. I own a flat top and it's also gone through close to a thousand without a hiccup.

they are far from garbage, it is a dedicated AR trainer in .22. The ruger will look like an AR but does not function like an AR one bit.

the 10 round limit sucks big time now as does the restricted status, but the rifle itself is top notch

I totally agree. However you could spend abit more and buy a 22AR upper and train on your Ar lower. If the m&p wasn't restricted I wouldn't be saying this!

Well it appears I have successfully de-railed my own thread! From the get-go I failed to consider the restricted status of the M&P.

Still wary about the ISSC and at $700 it seems like a little much for a 22. Quality for dollar outlay seems to point to the SR22. So all in all I guess I have my answer.

I have an ISSC MK-22 and it looks ###y and shoots fine but i find it boring to shoot. It has so much material but has no recoil so feels underwhelming. My brother has a plinkster which shoots well and seems more entertaining to shoot.
