would like to hear if others with the m&p22 are having problems and what ammo they are using.
I got mine last fall using blazer bulk and boxed ammo, had no problems at all last year 3 times out.
Went out this winter same ammo, and it would not cycle the first 3 rounds of every mag. and the rest of mag cycled fine.
Cleaned it and used like no oil at all (thought too much oil may have been the problem, or being cold). went out a month ago and had cycling problems again not just the first couple rounds but even in the middle of the mag, but then it would be fine for 4 or 5 mags and then ftc again.
So we went out yesterday, with 4 more mags (that we finally got), a box of federal boxed ammo and the blazer boxed ammo, we did pretty good but still had cycling problems sporadically.

Is there a fix for this or do I need to get better ammo, or am I doing something wrong cleaning (I have been using a very lite wif of g96 on a rag to wipe it all down after its cleaned) or am I assembling something wrong?

I seen a post that asked if you guys lubed your ammo? would that help?

When you watch you can see it moves very sluggish? We are holding it as tight as possible to let the energy do its thing.

Cheers,
Darwin

Hi Darwin,

I have exactly the same issue. Usually it's only the second round though. I am using Winchester bulk. Local store said I should buy a new spring and start clipping off one coil at a time until it cycles consistently.

Mine had cycling problems initially but it's definitely gotten much better with time (3000 rounds?)

I clean mine with brake kleen and oil it with Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil about every 500 rounds.

I've been using Federal blue box. I've heard they like CCI but haven't tried it.

Besides the cycling beef I've found mine shoots a touch high especially with first cold barrel shot.

All semiauto 22LR firearms are relatively picky about ammo. If yours doesn't cycle reliably with reasonable mid-grade ammunition like CCI minimags, THEN you might have a problem. Don't assume that it should be able to run with one of a couple of different brands of the cheap stuff.

It probably will work with one or two brands of bulk ammo once it's better broken in, but there is a lot of trial and error in determining which flavour it likes.

Cheap ammo is dirtier as well, which means that it fouls the pistol faster and this will start to hurt the function quicker than the midgrade stuff.

That's very surprising advice to hear from a gun shop. I bet S&W would be very interested to hear that one of their retailers was suggesting this.

I am trying to be diplomatic with the above, but that sounds like terrible advice.

Wont take long to the stock spring to soften and the problem will disappear, no need to cut anything. Use Remington Golden Bullet, they are the best in the M&P22.

My M and P 22 cycled everything right out of the box, even that Wildcat crap. The only time I have ever had problems with a 22 handgun firing was in -22 weather. It was so cold I could watch the slide close almost in slow motion.

I had trouble with mine with all kinds of ammo, until I lubed the slide with as much grease as I could get in there...

All of my other guns get a light smear just where necessary, but the m&p 22 seems to like being overlubed. It's the only gun that I have to clean regularly.

Tried some federal hollow point high velocity today, they are only 20 fps more and 2 grain lighter than solid point federal, twice the price sadly. But only had 1 round fail in 5 clips. (sure is nice to have the extra clips) Then loaded up 5 clips with the solid point and had problems with all clips. I forgot to lube the snot out of it like Metcalfe suggests, will try that next weekend. But I think we just may have found a round it likes, too bad its the more expensive stuff.

Cheers

I noticed if I cycle mine, it tightens up about one inch of slide travel. I noticed a wear mark on the recoil spring guide rod that seems to match up. Strange that it is the second round of ten for mine, but the guide rod is the only wear I found
