I just bought an M&P 40 and realized that it has no external safety. I overlooked this when I was looking at the gun online and put the order through over the phone. This being my first "striker fired" pistol, I am not familiar with the internal safeties on this gun yet.I have not shot IPSC or PPC for a while and I can't remember what the procedure would be to "Load and make ready" for this gun without putting the safety on before holstering. What will stop this pistol from firing if the trigger gets snagged while holstering? Does it simply come down to the obvious of keeping your finger off the trigger and make sure that nothing will get caught on the trigger while holstering the gun?

I owned a M&P 40 pro. The only issue you might have is if your pistol has a magazine safety. Which means it can only fire with a magazine inserted.

With striker fired pistols, it will at least have the trigger safety and an internal firing pin safety.

Other than normal loading procedures when making your pistol ready to fire, there is nothing else to do it but holster it.

When you are finished a stage, if it has a magazine safety, you will have to put a magazine (empty) in the pistol in order to bring the striker (i.e. hammer) forward and then reholster.

I personally prefer not having a safety, even though I use a shadow.

IMO, striker fired pistols are easier to use, extremely reliable and easier to clean.

The only negative you will have in IPSC is having to compete in Standard against much heavier pistols.

Have fun

Or he can shoot production and download the .40 to make a nice soft shooting gun.

I will more than likely shoot production. I used to shoot production with a S&W-645 with light loads. In regards to a magazine safety, I dry fired the pistol without a magazine and it fired. So i guess the only thing to do is chamber a round and holster. No need to engage a safety. Thanks for the responses.

Download the gun with 180 gr lead boolits and you will have one soft shootng gun for ProductioWith the option of loading major and shooting Standard as well.

Take Care

Mike, I've also recently purchased an M&P40 and did my first round of IPSC style shooting with it the other week. Load & Make Ready - no issues of not having an external safety. Simply load, rack and holster. I'm using a Blackhawk SERPA holster currently.

For "Unload and Show Clear" - the guy I was practising with is a trained timing official and he said to just inform the official that the weapon has a sear disconnect when the magazine is removed - no issue. I would unload the mag, rack slide/eject live round, show clear chamber, release slide and pull the trigger. No click, but again once officical was aware of the sear disconnect, no issues and I didn't have to re-insert an empty magazine. Now, having said all that, I would check with the officials and the rules for where you shoot.

I've ordered a Costa Catalyst extended mag release and will be upgrading my sights to FO and probably getting an Apex Competition AEK trigger kit for it.

My MP9 has no safety but has the warning right on the slide 'will fire with no magazine' or something like that. I load and make ready with a chambered round and holster. Fast to draw and fire, makes me concentrate on keeping my finger off the trigger till I'm ready to put holes in paper. When I'm done (missing paper, doh!) I release the mag, cycle the slide and pull the trigger to put the 'hammer' down.

Sounds easy enough. I am used to having to engage a safety on my other guns that not seeing an external safety threw me off. By your response, it sounds like it is actually an advantage for a quick first shot, without having to flip off a safety. Can't wait to get to the range and shoot.

My buddy has an MP45 WITH the safety though, doesn't really slow him down. I guess its just what your used to shooting/practicing with.
