M&P9: Is this normal

Its normal "casting mark"

Dont over think it, just go shoot it some more :)

Exactly....It's a MIM cast part. That divot is on every m&p out there, maybe not quite as pronounced but it's there. As Dsiwy said, don't worry about it at all, just go shoot it.

Don't listen to the guys about the oil. Oil as you see fit. From my experience some guns like to run wet some on the dry side. It also depends on the oil your using and how often your oiling/cleaning. The only time too much oil is a problem is if you are an operator or you shoot a competition in really dusty conditions or are gonna be dragging your gun through the sand as the extra oil could pick up more dirt causing more wear. My opinion is that it will cause far more wear, under normal target use, letting slide rails and the like run dry as the small amount of oil used has evaporated exc. I use a gun grease on these high abrasion areas to combat this problem. It stays in place much better. And, yes it picks up some gun powder residue but, that is why you clean and oil regularily. Its not like gun powder residue and small brass particles are much match for the hardened steel rails, slide, exc. anyway. Blast it out with brake clean or the like, oil/grease, shoot, repeat.

Its an abnormally large break-in from removing the excess sprue after the piece is moulded.(at least that what we called it when I worked a an iron foundry making cast iron parts.) Like others have said, every M&P will have that mark to some degree or another. Yours is just very large. If it bugs you by all means contact S&W warranty centre hear in CA. But it obviously does not affect function.

On a side note when working at said foundry, any piece that had excessive break-in like your M&P was sent to the reject bin to be melted and re-cast. We were told to reject any break-in that went into the cast piece itself. Ideally the moulds were designed to break the sprue off without going into the piece itself, then they were ground down flush when we removed the mould lines on the grinders.

That's a solid steel locking block, I doubt its MIM. I could be wrong though.

yours is a little more pronounced than most but i wouldn't worry about it.

here is mine for comparison:

Thats worse than any casting/machining marks ive ever seen even on a norc!

S&W quality control takin a dive or what?

I assume you have a few or many Norcs but NO S&Ws?

I'd say S&W has pretty damned good QC control actually. If the OP feels he does not want to trust that it will not affect anything, easy enough to get ahold of MD Charlton who is the S&W Canadian repair&warranty center.

MY marks in just looking similar to clubs' ...

From what I've been reading online it's MIM, even the new strikers are MIM and are supposed to be stonger than the old ones. I believe the sear and a few other parts are also MIM.

Nope, but I have owned a couple in the past, as well as an M&P 9.

Interestingly enough I had no issues with any of the Norcs, can't say the same for the M&P.

You sound like you own an M&P and not much else!

EDIT: Not even gonna bother.

Anyways.........

As far as the OP's problem, I would be pissed if that was my gun. Not that it will really affect function, but that is just plain ugly, and the results of poor QC, and a lazy employee, or a cheap company.

Contact MD Charlton, I dealt with them for some M&P issues, and they were very helpful.

After all your helpful comments and a bit more reading(thanks to Jackrabbitt000 links), I'm pretty sure that it came like that from the factory. I did send off an e-mail to S&W citing my concern with pictures.

Being new to the gun world I just wanted to make sure everything was normal. Also being a new gun I did not want to make things worst and risking any warranty troubles later on.

I plan on going to the range again tomorrow.

Your question was answered already but I just stripped my issued M&P40; yours is the worst I've seen, but it's on every M&P here too. I'm not impressed by M&P fit and finish to say the least, you just proved how low their tolerance are... My barrel look like s**t too.
