So I got the first chance to give my M&P a work out today, put about 100 rounds through it and only had 1 mag out of ten that didn't have a jam. All were the same sort of jam, the spent case was only extracted about 1/4 - 1/2 of an inch and it was jamming against the next round in the mag. I'm using Winchester WinClean ammo and it was all I had so I couldn't see if other ammo would feed better. Should I just try different ammo or should I be looking something else as the cause?

I'm thinking you could have an extractor problem. Weak extraction can cause this type of failure. I would clean your gun really well, the try some different ammo, although ammo should have no effect. If ammo selection causes issues(with the exception of truncated cone or wadcutter) with reliability, then the design is crap. That goes for any make or model of handgun. If the problem persists I would look into warranty work.

was the ejection erratic as well?

I agree! but my M&P9 has been 100% reliable; so it's not the design problem.

a guy i know had problems w/ the mag catch dropping mags for no reason (it was warranteed).. i would check for proper mag seating.

My own M&P 9 has been perfect so far.

Agreed! Winclean shouldn't be the problem. I too think it's an extraction or mag issue. If you clean it up real well this time and it happens again, I would definitely go through warranty.

Actually, there have been a lot of quality issues with Winclean ammo lately, so I wouldn't rule out that possibility.

Hmm, okay sorry for misleading you Davey Crockett. I haven't heard of any issues with Winclean, this is the first time, but perhaps ammo might be an issue afterall.

Thanks for posting this capp325! :)

I'd try differnent ammo. I've yet to have a stoppage with the M&P after 2 cases of the cheap Ammerican Eagle stuff (which i prefer over Winchester) If the slide is going back only a 1/4 - 1/2" ...its not the extractor. Sounds like either insufficient gas or heavy fouling. Clean it well and go for a heavier factory load....loading 9mm is a waste of time and money.

Sorry if I'm not explaining it correctly but when it jams the slide is open and stopped by the next round in the mag, it's the case that is only out of the chamber by a 1/2 " or so.

I don't know if this is relevent but I actually found several bullets I shot laying on top of the snow only a few yards past the target board at 25 yards. I know 9mm isn't a power house but shouldn't a bullet make it through a piece of 1/4" plywood and bury itself in the snow? There was no deformation of the lead or jacket. Seemed odd and I thought maybe indicated an ammo problem.

I will clean it throughly tonight and give it a try again next weekend. Thanks for your input guys.

Try some different ammo, some regular Winchester or some Remington UMC, I had some problems with my .40SW and Winclean back when I first got it. Some of the casings were even a little corroded. I was getting a TON of stovepipes and as soon as I went to my reloads, all the problems disappeared. Now I've been shooting CanadianBDX reloads and nay a problem.

Don't use that ammo..you'll get a bullet stuck in your barrel...and get some serious problems if you chamber a round and fire...that ammo is NFG. I'd take it back to the store you bought it from... and complain. 1/4 " plywood WTF...

Wow, didn't take you a long time to find an MP9... you only found out about it on the 31st, lol.

Anyhow where did you get it from? How much?

Sorry your having problems, let us know if changing ammp works. If not, maybe you just got a lemon, and can bring it back for a different one.

the winclean stuff is real bad news, it tends to do the complete opposite of its name. Take a good look for unfired powder and or residue left over in the gun.

I had a few bad primers as well. Very surprised for stuff coming from winchester. I can tell you also that it was evaluated by one of the police forces recently and it failed miserably.

Now one thing you have to understand with jams nine times out of ten its the mag. Check you mag very carefully it could be that as well.

You must have me confused with someone else nickorette. I picked this pistol up beginning of January, this is just my first chance to get it out.

MrClark: I had problems with both my mags. Other than being stiff and a
b!tch to load I can't see anything wrong with them. There is some powder in the barrel (I'm not sure how much is too much) but the rest of the action looks fairly clean, certainly nothing unexpected.

To ease out the mags leave them loaded for a couple of weeks, like the trigger they do ease out. The ammo sounds pretty dodgey, I can't recall ever seeing a 9mm bullet that I shot.

edited to add - before someone tears my head off, please observe the following: do not place the loaded mags in the pistol for storage. Loaded magazines are legal to store - they must be locked seperately from the pistol, unless you have a safe, in which case they can be stored (seperate from the pistol) in the safe. Do I get my Brownie badge now.

Yah, I agree, it costs me $1.86 to reload a box of 50 9mm 124gr. Hardly worth my time. And the 750 reloaded rounds I've put thru my cheap assed Norinco NZ85 without one FTF, well that is just $hithouse luck!

Just how much do you pay for a box of factory 9mm? Under $2.00? :runaway:

Oh sorry, I misread your thread. I thought it read "MP9 jam o matic". I missed the "&" symbol.

I was reffering to this thread, and thought you picked up the MP9/TP9 already.
