m&p9 slide automaticly closes with loaded mag

This a newb question, when I put in a loaded mag the slide sometimes closes. What would cause this and what might be the solution?? I have put about 1800 rounds through it and it just started to do this. Is this just a maintnance issue or am I going to need some parts?

edit;; it's only when I put the loaded mag in the gun... The slide stays back on empty mag

When I slowly put a loaded mag in the gun with the slide open it is not supposed to close unless I press the slide release..

Holy crap, I just tried this with my M&P40.
If I slap the mag in "hard", the slide closes! I never slam my mags in so I would never have noticed. I think that this is an undocumented "feature". In a combat situation, no need to fumble for the slide release. I don't think it is an "issue" to worry about.
 
I relize that if you put it in fast it does that on almost any gun even my 1911. but I'm not pushing it in that hard or any harder than I normally do. It just seems more sensitive than normal
 
"...an undocumented "feature"...." That'd be a programmer's explanation for something that doesn't work properly.
You shouldn't need parts for a pistol with only 1800 rounds through it. Give it a bath first. Then look at the slide release.
 
The M&P is a service pistol. In combat quick mag changes are GOOD!:)

I shoot IDPA with mine and quick mag changes are GOOD!:dancingbanana:

If this a problem for you do NOT buy a M&P because it will close when you slam a mag home.:runaway:

Perhaps a revolver would be better for you in this instance. When I insert a speedloader into my Model 15 it never closes until I close it.:cool:

This may suit you better if the quick closing slide on an automatic concerns you.;)

Most pistols will do that. Really it comes down to the slide engagement on the tab of the slide release. Loading mag fast can cause enough bump to release the slide.

I should have been more specific. Like I said before, I relize when you load a mag in fast the slide sometimes closes. I'm fine with that . but now it is closing even when I put the mag in SLOWLY.

sometimes it helps to read all the posts

I was RO yesterday at my club.
We tried the agressive mag change on the following:
  • CZ-75
  • CZ-75B
  • Walther P99
  • Beretta 92
  • Taurus
  • Glock 17
  • Glock 22
  • M&P 9
  • M&P 40
  • Tanfoglio 1911 Custom (.45ACP)
Each and every one of the above had the slide close automatically after a hard/agressive mag change. It sure looks like it is intrinsic to all semi-auto pistols.
 
Its simple physics folks. The force applied to the magazine and pistol exceeds the friction between the slide lock and the slide causing the slide to close. Some may see it as an additional feature, but with normal force the slide should not close. I've seen many pistols close from excessive magazine seating and NOT chamber a round. I would not consider this action as something to practice or desire.
