Saw another thread where somebody asked about switching a .40 down to a 9mm in a Smith & Wesson M&P40. My question is the opposite. I own a M&P9 and am considering upping to a .40 for IPSC.
Can you just switch out the barrel and magazine? Are the slide and internals otherwise identical?

I went to the Storm Lake Machine site and figured it would be a pretty economical alternative to buying a whole new handgun.

Thanks for any info,
Glen

If you have a 9mm you can't go to a .40...it doesn't fit (the barrel that is). You can go the other way 'round though...**EDIT** apparently lots of guys (in other forums) talk about putting a stock 9mm barrel into a .40 slide and it working fine...other stuff I read says the breech face dimensions are different. I just got an M&P357 and got the correct .40 and 9mm conversion barrels (from Storm Lake). No issues.

You can buy a complete upper in .40cal that will fit just fine on your 9MM frame. If you do it right the cost isn't much more than a after market barrel.

Put a WTB ad on the M&P Forum and you likely get some offers. I bought a used .40cal top end for $100 from a fellow. The slide had some holster wear - likely a police turn in - but the barrel showed little wear. I had offer for new top ends for $275 - $325. After I bought the top end I scored a complete fram here on gunnutz for $225. I now have a complete .40cal M&P FS for $325.
