Was at the Bull Meadows Range, this Sunday for a 500 and 600 and two 800
meter matches. This with a VAR barrelled M1 30-06, reconditioned in 1992, via the Danish Army.
Yes, I was way, way, out of my league, against Swing rifles, RPA Internationals and Angel M44s.
But this is all I had to got with.
Did okay at 500, a worse score at 600, and the first 800 shoot I sucked.
Competed again in the second 800 match and got a 31 and one "V" out of a possible 50. So that is not too bad for an M1 Garand, I think.

I love this rifle, but I am going to search for a dedicated High Power single shot 308, with good high grade sights...so I will place better next time I believe.
PS: Fat Tony was there too, and he with the loaned out M14S Polytech shooter beat me by a few points!?!?

An interesting experiment at least......
Cheers

I saw that.....I dropped in for a few minutes around 1430 or so before heading up to C range.

I was impressed that someone had the gumption to shoot that in the match. WELL DONE. Glad to see you had hits, and scored alright!

Sounds like your shooting was fine. What ammo did you use? M1's prefer 168 grain match bullets out to 600 yards and 175 grain match bullets past there. Both with IRM4064(Varget has a following too.) and regular large rifle primers. Good ammo is essential.

Hard to do well with 150s past 500...

In addition some LR reloading steps should be used to maximize results.

Always in my opinion a nice opportunity when we can the grand lady out and give her some exercise.

Enjoy

BTW, what's a typical 100 yds group size with this ammo??

Sunray, I used Accubonds of 150 grain weight and 48.0 grains of IMR3031.
CCI #34 primers and mixed brass casings.

This is NRA data from way back.
I too should of used IMR4064, but I have alot of 3031 to burn off...

The worst day of shooting is still better than the best day of working. Good on you for getting out and trying it! At our ISSF match last weekend, a fellow shot one of the two days in TR class with an AR 15! No, it probably isn't the best gun for that sort of thing, but who cares!

Maybe coming out and playing will give you the inspiration to try using something else or to start planning the mother of all target rifles for future matches.

We had a "Service Rifle" class added to one of the TR shoots here the other year....good for a laugh, firing my AR in combats and webbing versus these old gents all slung up and strapped into their jackets.

I think they damn near went into shock when I started calling their rifles "weapons" when I was the RSO.
