Anyone have a M1 Carbine chambered in 5.7mm Johnson ??

What do you think of it, cause it looks like a good small game gun if its possible to get a 19" barrel for the firearm. :dancingbanana:

Dimitri

Nope. A 19" barrel would be a custom barrel. Gunparts has 18" barrels though. $187.40US. They want $55.15US each, for headspace guages. The ammo and/or brass isn't easy to come by either.
Brass can be made out of .30 Cabine brass, but the dies etc are horrendously expensive. Midway wants $142.99US for RCBS dies. Special order 90 days plus wait. $63.79US for a Redding case forming die. $76.99US for a neck reamer.

I knew a fellow who had a 5.7 Johnson, but that was probably 30 yrs ago. I only remember he had it - not that he shot it. Maybe that suggests what he thought about it.

FWIW, Cartridges of the World indicates, the .30 Carbine cartridge is not very flexible and is not a particularly good choice for hunting. Because of this, many efforts have been made to improve the performance. However, none of them have been much more successful than the original cartridge.

I've knocked down 46 coyotes with my rebarreled M1 since last November... None of them had a chance to debate it's effectiveness.

Great short range hunter.

I am looking at the M1 Carbine in 5.7mm as a small game/rabbit loading, better then a 22LR but not to big.

Dimitri

There are alot of common cartridges available that pretty much duplicate the 5.7 Johnson/Spitfire/MMJ velocities......

Yah but hunting with a M1 Carbine will match my M1A. :p

Actually my 2nd choice would be a non-restricted 5.7mm FN that takes Five-Seven magazines. But havnt seen one. :(

Was discussing this with a friend a while ago, Did they just ream out the chanber and use the existing barrel/bore? That would be a nice cheap shooter. Any idea how range and accuracy are compared to an original in .30 carbine?

John

I have a carbine converted to 7.62x25 mm

came out of china i was told

works well

its a usgi underwood

"...use the existing barrel/bore?..." Different calibre. Different barrel. The 5.7 Johnson(there were a few others too) is a necked down to .22 cal, .30 carbine case. Ran around 3,000fps with a 40 or 45 grain bullet. Average groups were 2 to 3 MOA out of a conversion kit made, long ago, by a guy in Indiana.
Converting one now would cost a fortune.
"...not a particularly good choice for hunting..." It's not using factory ammo. A 110 grain HP with IMR4227 will blow a hole the size of a grapefruit in a ground hog. And shoot far better than 2 or 3 inches at 100.

I was asking about the 7.62 tok conversion contact148 mentioned. I was discussing it offline with him, and discovered that yes they did use the same barrel. Sounds like it might be an easy conversion, just have to bore out the chamber a bit, and do some work on the bolt.
