M1 carbine enough gun for deer?

Those in this thread who think the 30-30 is marginal, well I can't count as many times I've hunted moose with groups that use 30-30's and have no problem killing big bulls and cows. yes they have their range limits but here in Ontario under or near a 100 yards is where most shots are taken. I'm sure the 30 carbine will kill deer but there's a ton of better options to pick from.

Haven't you heard that sometime in the last 20 years whitetail deer have had their genetics altered by the government and have started wearing body armor making them immune to the effects of any cartridge that dosn't contain the word "magnum" . In addition if you shoot a deer with a rifle that dosn't cost at least $1500.00 you will only wound it. My Father and Grandfather tried to trick me by telling stories about killing hundreds of deer with 30-30's and surplus Enfields but I found the truth here on the internet. Back to the original post, I love the M1 carbine but feel it's +P 38 special ballistics are a tad on the unethical side for deer.

I'd agree it's a marginal cartridge, just as some of the .22 centerfires are marginal. But they *do* work if you are willing to use a premium bullet and place your shots carefully and at reasonable range.

The 110gr TSX Barnes now offers should get the job done, within a reasonable distance.

Small cartridges + good bullet + good shot placement = dead deer.
 
I would consider hunting with the 30 carbine as close to hunting with a pistol as you could get without using a pistol. You need to be close and accurate.

After my shoulder surgery I carried a 30 for one season. I let a nice 6 point walk due to his distance was approximately 75 yds. Yes I feel I could've taken the shot, I lined up and took the safety off, then he turned and I didn't feel like I had a clean shot.
