Recently aquired a Plainsfield Machine Co. M1 Carbine. One of the previous owners had built up the front sight for some reason and now it shoots incredibly low. I have to set the rear sight at 200 yards to be zeroed at 75 paces.

If one of you guys could give me the proper height of the front sight I can file this one back down to where it should be.

Thanks and Regards,

Nick

How hard is it to replace the front sight, I just bought one that has the ears filed down and I want the original sight setup. Are they hard to find? Do i need a smith? Any info would be appreciated.

Soak with oil and let sit overnight, tap out small roll pin at bottom DO NOT LOOSE IT!,tap sight foreward and off, oil new one and reverse.

"...tap out small roll pin..." Shouldn't be a roll pin, but it comes out with a 3/32" punch left to right. Definitely do not lose the wee pin. Put the rifle in a padded vise with an inch or so of the barrel sticking out first.
"...tap sight forward..." Use a plastic mallet or a hunk of hard wood.
Do not touch the key.
"...Are they hard to find?..." Gunparts. Except they're sold out. Do a net search.

IIRC Front sights were filed down at factory for proper zero for each individual rifle, so one rifle's front post might be different to another.
But that's also for the USGI ones, not sure about commercial ones.

Hey, that book I got with my Plainfield proved useful.

of course the m1 carbine is on the NO export list so even if they had any NO m1 carbine parts can legally be shipped out of the usa without enduser certs
