M1 Carbine Hole?

Well, I was always a black gun guy. Now I have been bit by the Wood Bug. After picking up two Marlin 1894's, I saw the M1 Carbine, it was so ###y.

Then I found out how rare and expensive the .30Carbine ammo was. Then I saw the Chiappa M1 Carbine 9mm. I fell in love, the ###y look in 9mm ;)

I noticed the Original M1 Carbines and the Chiappa M1 Carbine have holes in the stock. What is the hole for?

The one in the stock is for the oiler which also holds the sling. Fondly referred to as the sling well.

The two (actually four as there is two on the other side) on the handguard near the receiver are for rivets which connect to a piece of metal that holds the handguard in place.

The bottom one is the magwell where the magazines go, and the one at the end of the barrel is where the bullet comes out..........sorry couldn't help myself........jk.
 
Actually there are 3 holes in the barrel. The one that jody_v thoughtfully pointed out, one other being at the breech end where the cartridge goes in & casing comes out. (Sorry, couldn't resist that either). Third hole is the gas hole, drilled at 50degree from the bore axis 5/16 diameter, so the gas piston can do its thing.

That leads to a serious question, does anyone know if this 9 mm Chiappa has the same short-stroke piston gas op system as the 30 carbine? Or is it straight blow back operation? Iver-Johnson made a 9 mm version for police use in the US in the 70's, with limited marketing success. I-J also introduced a spring loaded firing pin inside the bolt in their 30 carbines, unlike USGI bolts.

The other thing I would check closely is the sights. Their .22LR M1 Carbine has cheap plastic sights on both the front and rear. I don't see these holding up well.
 
If you reload, the .30 Carbine reloads just like any pistol cartridge. Good factory is scarce due to the restricted status and longer barrels not being readily available.
